The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team split a pair of Southern Conference home matches against Campbell and Davidson in Maclellan Gym today. The Mocs were edged by the Campbell 21-19 in the opener, but bounced back to beat Davidson 44-3.
There were three individuals ranked in the top-20 in the dual with the Camels (6-6, 2-1 SoCon), and all three lost. Unfortunately for the Mocs (5-8, 3-1 SoCon), two of their ranked competitors were upset late in the match as Campbell scored the comeback victory.
Sophomore
Alonzo Allen opened with another impressive victory. He scored an 11-4 decision over No. 13 Nathan Kraisser, avenging a loss early in the season at the Southern Scuffle. For Allen, it was his fifth win in his last four matches and his first over a ranked competitor. He improved to 11-10 overall and 3-0 in SoCon action.
"
Alonzo Allen continues to make huge strides," stated UTC head coach
Heath Eslinger. "He has beaten some really good kids in consecutive matches and I think he is on his way up."
Sophomore
Chris Debien followed that with a pin at 133, giving UTC a 9-0. Campbell responded with wins in the next three bouts, including a major decision at 149 and a tech fall at 157, to take a 12-9 lead at the halfway mark.
Junior
Justin Lampe put the Mocs back on top 13-12 with a major decision at 165. Senior
Sean Mappes seemed to put Chattanooga in the driver's seat with a pin at 174 and a 19-12 margin.
Two of the last three matches featured ranked Mocs, but No. 17
Bryce Carr lost in overtime to Ville Heino at 184. Heino is the returning SoCon champ at that weight, but Carr beat him 12-4 earlier in the year at the Scuffle.
Campbell won at 197 to close the team score to 19-18 with one match left. Senior
Jared Johnson, ranked No. 10 at heavyweight, was up 4-3 with less than 30 seconds left when he gave up a takedown and back points to Jere Heino. That gave Campbell the team victory.
This was Campbell's first win in eight matches all-time against Chattanooga, but it was far from an upset. The Camels are ranked No. 18 in this week's mid-major top-20.
The Mocs went on to steamroll Davidson 44-3, improving to 25-0 all-time against the Wildcats. UTC had three pins and three major decisions in the victory. Lampe posted one of those pins in just 13 seconds of action at 165.
Up next for UTC are trips to Gardner-Webb and No. 16 Appalachian State next weekend. The final home match is Feb. 12 against The Citadel at 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Maclellan Gym.
