Mocs Travel to Furman for Weekend Golf Action

Phillip Hickam has improved his scoring average nearly two-and-a-half strokes for the Chattanooga Mocs with his strong play this spring.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team heads to Greenville, S.C., this weekend for its semi-annual stop at the Furman Intercollegiate. The Mocs traversed Furman University Golf Course in six of the last nine editions of the event.
It's a team coming off its best event of the year. The sixth-place finish at the Southern Intercollegiate doesn't sound glamorous, but it came against a strong field, including a win over No. 19 Georgia. And that was without senior Wes Gosselin anchoring the lineup.
Gosselin is back this week along with Stuart Thomas, Brooks Thomas, Etienne Brault and Phillip Hickam. Andrew Weathers, Will Porter and Lake Johnson are entered as individual in the 20-team field.
The opening 18 starts Friday morning with the first of two waves beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Mocs are in the afternoon wave playing with Temple and Francis Marion starting on No. 1 at 12:40 p.m. Click the links above for live scoring and pairings.

"I feel like we're starting to hit somewhat of a stride. We've played the golf course several times (over the years), we like it, so I think it'll be a good week for us to build on the momentum we have (entering this week)."
Improvement the team's shown from September to the present:
"We've tried to do some things differently this year and give each of the guys a lot more responsibility concerning their own games. We've really worked hard to make sure everyone is a part of the process. They've responded very well, and it's fun to watch. To a man, I believe everyone on this team is tremendously improved over where they were in August. I'm happy with the progress everybody has made to the point, I couldn't really pick one guy out."

- Hickam has sliced nearly five strokes off his average from fall (77.00) to spring (72.18), a difference of 4.82 strokes per 18. That's an improvement of 2.41 to his overall scoring average (74.59).
- Spring Scoring Leaders (Team: 289.25): Gosselin (70.67), Hickam (72.18), Brault (73.00), S. Thomas (73.13), B. Thomas (73.38).
- Gosselin returns to the lineup after a trip to California for McKenzie Tour (PGA Canada) Q-School. He tied for 21st in the 120-player field earning conditional status for the 2017 season.
- Gosselin has posted five straight par or better cards at Furman University Golf Course.
- Porter and redshirting freshman Oliver Simonsen played in the Azalea Amateur in Florida over Spring Break with both finishing in the top 15. Porter tied for 10th at 5-over 215, while Simonsen was one behind at +6 tying for 14th after closing his 54-hole week with a 68.
