Mocs Travel to Pinehurst for SoCon Men’s Golf Championships

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team tees off Sunday at the Southern Conference Championships. The championships return to Pinehurst No. 9 at the famed Pinehurst, N.C., golf community.
The Mocs are in search of their seventh SoCon title. Five of the previous six – 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 – came under the guidance of 12th-year head coach Mark Guhne.
Seniors Wes Gosselin and Brooks Thomas leads the quintet east. Gosselin's 72.07 stroke average paces the squad followed by Thomas' 72.94. Stuart Thomas (73.76), Etienne Brault (73.78) and Phillip Hickam (74.71) round out the squad.
Chattanooga is the top-ranked team in the field at No. 93 in the Golfstat ratings. UNCG is close behind at No. 100 followed by ETSU (110) and Wofford (144).
Just eight shots separated the top five a season ago. The Bucs won by one over the Spartans with Furman (3 back), UTC (6) and the Terriers (8) in pursuit.
No. 9 has produced fantastic finishes over the previous three visits. The Mocs came in second by one shot in 2014 to Georgia Southern, while ETSU topped UNCG in a sudden-death playoff in 2015 before escaping with the one-shot victory last year.

- Fourth straight year the championships have been awarded at No. 9 (formerly Pinehurst National).
- Director of Golf at No. 9 is none other than UTC Hall of Famer Matt Vick. Matt was an All-American kicker for the football program playing from 1997-2000.

- The Mocs own six SoCon Championships winning in 1987, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013. Donnie Green (1978) and Stephan Jaeger (2012) captured individual titles.
- Team Stroke Average at Pinehurst No. 9 (9 Rounds): 291.89.
- This season's 290.77 scoring average is currently third-best in school history (286.84, 2007-08 & 289.85, 2010-11).
- Three different Mocs own wins this season: Gosselin (Mobile Sports Authority Int.), Brault (Trevecca Fall Inv.) and B. Thomas (USA Individual). It's the first time in school history three different student-athletes claimed wins.
- Gosselin (72.07) is attempting to become the fourth Moc with a sub-72 season. The other three came from All-Americans Hodge (71.41, 2007-08) and Jaeger who did it twice in 2010-11 (71.67) followed by a school-record 71.14 in 2011-12.
