Men’s Golf Begins Season this Weekend in Dalton

Will Porter and the Chattanooga Mocs open the 2017-18 season Friday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in nearby Dalton, Ga.

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf program is ready to start its 2017-18 season. The starting five head 30 minutes south to the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate at the Farm in suburban Dalton, Ga.
Coach Mark Guhne put his charges through an arduous qualifying journey since the start of school. It ended with the following five making the cut for one of collegiate golf's top fields: Luke Long, Will Porter, Phillip Hickam, Lake Johnson and A.J. Lintunen.
Hickam (Sr.), Johnson (Jr.) and Porter (So.) all return from last year. Long, the 2017 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, transferred in this season, while Lintunen is a freshman prepping at Chattanooga's Baylor School.
"I'm excited to get the season started," Guhne shared. "It's a good group and very competitive to make the travel squad. These five earned their way. I didn't hand out any spots, this was 1-5 in qualifying.
"There's a lot of talent being left home as well. Top-to-bottom, with the nine we currently have, I'm not sure we've been deeper since maybe 2008 or 2009."
It's a three-day, 54-hole journey at the Farm. Tee times and scores, when available, can be accessed at the live scoring link above.
PGA Tour winners Jordan Spieth (Texas), Tiger Woods (Stanford), Justin Thomas (Alabama), Matt Kuchar (Georgia Tech), Jim Furyk (Arizona), Justin Leonard (Texas), Chris DiMarco (Florida) and Bubba Watson (Georgia), among others, graced the Farm's rolling terrain. Stephan Jaeger, 2018 PGA Tour member, led the Mocs to the 2009 title with a hole-in-one on the treacherous eighth hole.
