Swinford Tosses Complete Game Shutout in 6-0 Win

Freshman Allison Swinford threw a complete game, three-hit shutout and struck out five during Thursday’s win over Maine.
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Freshman Allison Swinford tossed her first career complete game shutout while allowing just three hits as the Chattanooga Mocs softball team down Maine, 6-0, in Clearwater, Fla., on Thursday afternoon.
After the win, Chattanooga improves to 12-14 overall and 4-2 during their spring break trip in Clearwater. Maine fell to 6-13.
Swinford (5-4) threw all seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs while tying a career-high with five strikeouts.
The Mocs busted out for 11 hits, all of them singles, and scored three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Emma Sturdivant went 3-for-3 with a run scored while Brook Womack added a 2-for-2 performance and scored two runs. Hayleigh Weissenbach went 1-for-4 with two RBI while Katie Corum, Devan Brown and Alyssa Coppinger added an RBI.
Chattanooga scored the game's first runs in the top of the sixth when pinch-hitter Katie Corum grounded into a fielder's choice to third with runners on first and second. Kacie Lynch came around third and was called safe at the plate on an obstruction call from the catcher.
The Mocs added a pair of insurance runs after the obstruction call to build a 3-0 lead. Weissenbach delivered with a two-out, two-RBI single over the shortstop to bring in the runners.
Maine put together a rally in the home half of the sixth to load the bases with two outs. Swinford got ahead 0-2 in the count and induced a soft fly ball to left field that ended the threat.
UTC added three runs in the top of the seventh on three hits and one Maine error. Brown reached base and brought in the first two runs on a fielding error before Coppinger added another run on an RBI ground-out.
