Women’s Golf Opens the Season Monday

CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs women's golf team is ready to open the 2018-19 season. Qualifying is done, all that's left is Sunday's practice round at Cherokee Country Club and then the squad begins play Monday in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate in Knoxville.

It's lights-camera-action for a quintet that includes a senior and junior back from a season ago, a long-awaited debut for a transfer and two freshmen playing their first collegiate rounds. It's a mix Coach Colette Murray can't wait to see play as a unit.

"Very excited," Murray began. "We are happy with how the first few weeks have gone and are looking forward to seeing what we can produce with this new group.

"The energy is high…team chemistry is real…having a mix of young and older players is encouraging."

Senior All-SoCon performer Monica San Juan and junior Maddy McDanel are the returners. Junior Kirsty Beckwith sees her first action after transferring from St. John's in 2017. She redshirted in 2017-18. Freshmen Rheagan Hall, a Cleveland, Tenn., native, and Esme Hamilton also earned starts in preseason qualifying events.

LINEUP
Monica San Juan (35th career tournament for UTC), Rheagan Hall (1st), Esme Hamilton (1st), Maddy McDanel (18th) and Kirsty Beckwith (1st).

3 NOTES TO KNOW

Beckwith earned her spot in the lineup with a playoff win over freshman Dorota Zalewska. That provides an interesting mix of hometowns for the roster as Hall is from just outside Chattanooga. McDanel is from suburban Pittsburgh, while Beckwith and Hamilton are both from northern England. San Juan is originally from Pamplona, Spain.
Due to injury, the Mocs had five on the number available last season. This year, Murray and first-year assistant Ashley Burke are paring an eight-person roster down to a starting five. Zalewska (Poland), Miranda Rich (Ringgold, Ga.) and Michaela Kulhankova (Czech Republic) round out the group.
There are two great opportunities to travel to nearby tournaments with the Mocs opening in Knoxville Monday and Tuesday before making the short jaunt to Nashville (Franklin to be exact) for the Mason Rudolph Championships next Friday-Sunday.
