ABOUT CHATTANOOGA BASKETBALL
CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs on again, off again start to location this season brings the squad back to the Roundhouse Friday night. South Alabama comes to town coming off a near upset of No. 22 Auburn Tuesday night.
It was a fantastic Tuesday for the Mocs on the road at Troy. They came back from 14 points down in the second half at Trojan Arena to move to 2-1 on the young season.
Matt Ryan had the loud contribution with a game-high 21 points, but it was reserve wing
A.J. Caldwell that had the most notable moment.
Down one, 63-62, with the clock heading to the two-minute mark, Caldwell shot faked his man at the top of the key and drove to the basket. He scored through the foul, made the free throw sparking a 10-0 run as the Mocs pulled away to the exciting victory.
That was the largest second half comeback since Dec. 1, 2003. That also came on the road at Tennessee State with the Mocs scoring 65 points in the second 20 to flip a 42-28 deficit into a 93-86 triumph.
That makes back-to-back winning efforts when trailing at the half. The last time that happened was a three-game stretch in February 2015: ETSU (22-30), at VMI (31-36) and at UNCG (25-27). The latter was a 12-point deficit that ended on a buzzer-beater three by Ronrico White '15. Here's a bonus "3 Notes to Know" about the last two come-from-behind wins
:
- Trailed by 12 at the break...16th time coming back from double digits at intermission. The last time was down 10 to UNC Greensboro in the epic 87-85 double OT win on Jan. 29, 2018.
- Last time coming back from 12 or more was also in Alabama...12 at Jacksonville State on Dec. 21, 2017 leading to a 70-67 win.
- Was down four at the break to TSU this year and as many as seven in the second half. A 19-5 run flipped a 34-27 TSU lead (16:56) to 46-39 UTC (8:55) in 8:01 of clock time.
South Alabama provides a stern test as both teams enter with identical 2-1 marks. The Jaguars are taking their first road trip after opening with wins over Pikeville (82-51) and Southern Miss (75-69). They rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final minutes to take the lead at home against No. 22 Auburn with 28.4 seconds on the clock on a 3pt by Andre Fox. The Tigers missed twice on the ensuing possession, but Samir Doughty worked the offensive glass both times before setting up Isaac Okoro's game-winning layup for the 70-69 finish.
