Junior Fabian Gutierrez and sophomore Matthew Waddell led the Mocs with runner-up finishes at the Southeast Open today.  UTC finished with 10 placers overall at the one-day event in Roanoke, Va.

Gutierrez opened with a 9-5 decision over Missouri's Cameron Valdiviez at 125 pounds.  He scored a 3-2 decision over Campbell's Korbin Meink in the semifinals.  Meink is the defending Southern Conference Champion at 125 and the SoCon's preseason pick.  Gutierrez fell in the finals to Virginia Tech's Sam Latona (6-3).

Waddell defeated Campbell's Chris Kober (8-5) is the first round at 184.  He advanced to the finals with another 8-5 win over Missouri's Dylan Wisman.  He lost in the finals to Campbell's Andrew Morgan (MD, 14-5).  Morgan is the SoCon's preseason favorite at 184. 

Five Mocs finished in fourth place in their respective brackets, including Wade Cummings (133), Tanner Smith (149), Tyler Shilson (157), Rodney Jones and Grayson Walthall (285).  Another three had six place showings, including Franco Valdes (133), George Carpenter (157) and Drew Nicholson (165).

Up next for the Mocs is a tri-dual on Sunday, Nov. 10 with Illinois and Army.  The visiting teams get the action started at 10:00 a.m. (E.S.T.), with the Mocs taking on Army at Noon and Illinois at 2:00 p.m.  Season tickets and Southern Scuffle tickets are both on sale now on GoMocs.com.
