RECAP: Wrestling Finishes Runner-Up, Boast 7 on the Podium

2026 SoCon Runners Up

The Chattanooga Mocs finished second by a paper-thin margin with two winners and seven on the podium at the Southern Conference Championships.

Overview
The Chattanooga Mocs made a valiant run that fell short by a slim margin at the Southern Conference Championships. The Mocs powered by individual winners Cooper Flynn and Kade Rule ended as runner-up behind Appalachian State by a mere 1.5 points.

Flynn (125) and Rule (197) headlined seven Mocs making the podium. That tied Bellarmine for most in the field. Ethan Uhorchuk (133-2nd), Hunter Mason (141-3rd), Cavarius Liddie (157-3rd), Landon Jones (184-3rd) and Ethan Vergara (285-2nd) joined the duo as the 93 points scored by the squad were the most in 13 years.

Quotable
"They came out and looked to wrestle. They didn't look to just hold on and win, they got takedowns early and scored. That's what you have to do to win a conference Championship. You can't just sit back and let it come to you." – Coach Kyle Ruschell on champions Flynn & Rule

"We knew at the end of the day yesterday, we needed to have a good day (from the consolation guys). Those guys came out firing and found bonus points in every match except for one, and that was a really tough win." – Ruschell on the work done in the wrestle backs by the trio of third-place finishers

"It's a tough pill to swallow. It's a major decision here, not getting majored there. We had an alumni talk about how many times this is going down to a point or less. I think overall, our guys competed hard, and we really showed what we're made out of today but also in the second half of the season." – Ruschell on how his young group came together and made their run

The championship finals saw four each for UTC and Bellarmine while App boasted five.
  • Cooper Flynn got the finals off to a flying start. His first period pin (2:20) extended the team advantage to 5.5 points. It's his first conference title in his second championship match. The Seymour, Tenn., native was runner-up for Virginia Tech in the 2024 ACC Championships.

  • App found its way back atop the standings over the next six classes. Kade Rule lived up to his name at 197 as his major capped the strong run for the true freshman in capturing his first conference title. It also propelled Chattanooga back on top but by a precarious 2.5 points.
