Chattanooga Basketball Postgame Quotes
No. 24 Wofford at Chattanooga
McKenzie Arena – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Thursday – Feb. 28, 2019
Head Coach Lamont Paris
On the play of the Mocs defense:
"Overall on the three point shooters— mediocre, in terms of us executing specifically what we wanted to do. In the half court situation, I thought we were mediocre at best at what we wanted to do.
On making adjustments for the Furman game:
"We have to play better, we have to compete better. We will be focusing on what we can do better at practice in order to get our minds together to compete better. At the end of the day it comes down to us competing better, especially in this sport.
"When a couple of things go poorly for you, you have to compete and create your own luck and make a play happen … not by doing something extraordinarily from a basketball standpoint but by doing something extraordinarily well or doing something that involves extraordinary effort."
What happened in the second half?
"We didn't play well, we had a couple of times where we got the ball around the basket and didn't finish. I think Jackson got off to a great start in the second half. If a guy makes a great play then kudos to him, its basketball—people score points but we let them catch it easily there wasn't enough resistance. They found a rhythm and were playing well."
How well can Wofford do in the postseason?
"It comes down to performance. There's an unbelievable amount of distractions when it comes to that point. As many teams as I've seen that have won the tournament have had some characteristics that would give them a good chance to win. Some of those are from a basketball standpoint, or even a skill standpoint—physically I think they can compete, and they have toughness. Those are really the things that go in to winning, and they appear to be a team that you sense expects to go out and do certain things. They have a lot of tools that would lend them to succeed in the NCAA Tournament if they get to play in the NCAA tournament."
On the play of Donovann Toatley:
"He made some plays. The thing I like the most is that he is a competitive guy and he wanted to attack. His efficiency as a driver is something that he has to get better at, he can get in there he just needs to be more efficient. He was aggressive and competitive."
On getting to fifth place in the Southern Conference:
"I know there is some sort of equation that puts us out there to be a fifth place finisher in the
league. I think that is significant and I told the guys that I have never fought for fifth place and one day hopefully we get to the finish where we are disappointed in that but right now I am excited for fifth place. That's the reality of it, I think that would be a significant improvement from having the sixth least experienced team in the country at the beginning of the season and all of the turnovers and everything that has happened. I want them to want to win because we feel like we can play better than whoever we are going against, but I think that the fifth place finish would be an accomplishment."
David Jean-Baptist, So.-G
Take aways from the tough loss:
"One thing we can take away is how important rebounding the ball is, in the second half that killed us. It also killed us when we played them back at their place."
On the chance to finish fifth in the league race with a win on Saturday:
"That is huge motivation. Starting tomorrow with practice we have to let this loss go and start with a new mindset, we are still in 5th so we just have to play hard."
Donovann Toatley, Fr.-G
Thoughts on the game:
"Definitely just competing hard on defense, chasing their shooters. We have to be more locked in and focused on stopping their best players which is hard… Fletcher Magee, he is a terrific shooter, you saw some of the shots he hit tonight so just when guys get it going like that it makes it hard but we have to learn how to compete harder. We need to learn how to start halves better and come out with a lot more intensity and be more locked in on this big win that we could've had tonight."
How difficult is it to defend a team with four shooters?
"It's very difficult. When teams have capable shooters like that you just have to give them one shot and limit them to that and then capitalize on their misses."
