CHATTANOOGA---The long summer is gone. The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team opens the 2019-20 season this weekend at the Carpet Capital Collegiate outside nearby Dalton, Ga. It's been 135 days between tee times for 2008 champion of the event known as the "Masters of Collegiate Golf".
The Mocs went through a spirited qualifying tournament to name the five starters. Senior Will Porter and junior Oliver Simonsen were two mainstays from last year's lineup and are joined by junior A.J. Lintunen whose lone start last year was in the Carpet Capital before injury limited his campaign. Sophomores Moritz Lammel and Matt Smith are fresh faces at the Farm.
"It's a good blend of experience and new faces for this year's tournament," Coach Mark Guhne explained. "You're looking at a group that is hungry to get the season started. There is no more special place to begin than at the Carpet Capital.
"It's a stern test on a great golf course and the strength of the field is stronger than any event we play except the NCAA Championships."
Porter and Lintunen are making their third season-opening starts at the Carpet Capital, while Simonsen is making his second. Lammel missed out on qualifying prior to last year's event, while Smith is in his first year with the program.
It's a three-day, 54-hole journey at the Farm. Tee times and scores, when available, can be accessed at the scoring link above.
PGA Tour winners Jordan Spieth (Texas), Tiger Woods (Stanford), Justin Thomas (Alabama), Matt Kuchar (Georgia Tech), Jim Furyk (Arizona), Justin Leonard (Texas), Chris DiMarco (Florida) and Bubba Watson (Georgia), among others, graced the Farm's rolling terrain. Stephan Jaeger, 2018 & 2019 PGA Tour member, led the Mocs to the 2008 title with a hole-in-one on the treacherous eighth.
