ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF
ROCKY FACE, Ga.---It was a slow start for the Chattanooga Mocs at the season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate. The squad is 13th at 306. That's two behind Tennessee in 12th and four clear of Virginia in 14th.
Senior
Will Porter led the way with a 2-over 74. He got off to a great start with birdies at 12 and 13 before a bogey on the par 4 14th but got it right back with a birdie on 15. A double on 16 and bogey on 17 sent him through the turn at 1 over.
Back-to-back birds on one and two flipped Porter into red numbers. But the third hole bit. The long, uphill par 4 played into the wind today leading to a double. Two more bogeys preceded a finishing birdie for the 2 over total in a tie for 25th.
A.J. Lintunen and
Moritz Lammel each shot 77s.
Matt Smith completed his first Mocs round with 78, while
Oliver Simonsen had the drop score of 78. It was Lintunen's first 18 since last year's Carpet Capital, and just the third career start for Lammel.
"We had three guys in the lineup who haven't played much or at all for us," Coach
Mark Guhne began. "I think there were a few nerves early. We struggled on the easier side (back nine) which is frustrating. There were some big numbers that we just can't allow ourselves to make out here to be successful.
"But I'll tell you this," he continued. "I really liked our fight. It's easy to let rounds get away on this course, especially as hard as it played today. They all hung in there and put the best number on the board they could. I'm proud of that for them."
Lammel had the shot of the day holing out on the par 5 ninth. Playing as his final hole today, the German drained his gap wedge from 126 yards out. His coach took a little credit in a off-hand kind of way.
"He hit such a good drive there that I think he wanted to go for the green in two," Guhne chuckled. "He saw me standing up there and knew better. He laid up and made eagle the hard way. That's something that can jumpstart you for the rest of the weekend.
"We played the last hole pretty well making two birdies and an eagle. Hopefully we can pick up right where we left off."
Round two of the event begins at 8:24 a.m. The Mocs, Cavaliers and Kennesaw State lead off No. 10. Admission is free.
