Recap from Day 1 at the Scuffle

Mocs are in 14th place with three advancing to Day 2.

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior Matthew Waddell led a group of three Mocs who advanced to Day 2 of the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear.  Waddell posted three wins at 184 pounds today and will compete in the semifinals at Noon (E.S.T.) on Thursday, Jan. 2.

As a team, Chattanooga is in 14th place overall with 33.5 points.  Oklahoma State leads the field at 70, followed by North Dakota State (63), N.C. State (61.5), Rider (61) and Stanford (61) in the top five.

Waddell entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and opened with a pin against Drexel's Owen Brooks.  He followed that with a 9-2 decision over Air Force's Jake Thompson in the Round of 16.  Waddell closed out the day with a 3-2 victory against Campbell's Chris Kober in the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Colton Landers was also impressive at 133 pounds.  Prior to the Scuffle, his only action of the year was going 1-2 at the Southeast Open on Nov. 3.  After dropping his first round match he posted four wins in the backdraw to stay alive.

Landers started his run with a 13-3 major decision over West Virginia's Lucas Seibert before a 16-2 major against Little Rock's Aiden Campbell.  He had the signature win of the session for UTC with a 7-5 decision over Cal State Bakersfield's No. 4 seed Chance Rich.  Rich is currently No. 18 in the Flo rankings at 133 pounds.  Landers capped the evening action with a 7-3 decision over Iowa State's Ramazan Attasaouv.

Sophomore Tanner Smith is also still alive at 149 pounds.  He entered the day as the No. 5 seed, but lost in the Round of 16 to N.C. State's A.J. Leitten (4-2).  He then defeated two opponents from Rider to advance to Thursday's action.

Doors open at 9:00 a.m. with competition beginning tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in McKenzie Arena.  Tickets are on sale now on GoMocs.com or at the door.  There is also a $10 finals only ticket that is available at the Gate 1 Box Office after 5:00 p.m.  The semifinals are set for Noon, with the Medal Rounds at 7:00 p.m.  Follow all of the action on FloArena with every match broadcast by FloWrestling.
