ABOUT CHATTANOOGA BASKETBALL
CHATTANOOGA---Take 2. The Chattanooga Mocs are matching up with UNC Greensboro again this Saturday after earning a 74-72 win over the Spartans last Saturday. This is the third time the Mocs closed the regular season and opened tournament play with the same opponent.
The 2008 team finished with a 57-56 road win at Elon on a late 3pt by Nicchaeus Doaks '09. That captured the North Division crown before losing in the quarterfinals to the Phoenix 60-57 in North Charleston, S.C. Elon marched to the title tilt eventually losing to Steph Curry's Davidson squad.
It also happened in 1986 losing the finale to The Citadel at home, 82-57, before winning 69-66 in Asheville in the quarterfinals. That started a run to the final which ended in gut-wrenching fashion, 42-40, on Brandon Born's brother's buzzer-beater from the top of the key for Davidson.
Chattanooga is looking for SoCon record-tying 12th tournament title. Davidson also has 12 in several more seasons. Since UTC entered the league 43 years ago, it's 11 are the most followed by the Wildcats (8) and ETSU (7). 18 finals appearances since 1977-78 is far and away the most ahead of Davidson (12) & the Bucs (11).
Really it's take 3. The Mocs split the season series with UNCG. Both teams won on their home floor with the Spartans scoring 72 in both meetings -
52-72 in Greensboro/
74-72 in Chattanooga. Series info - historical & seasonal – is on pp. 14-15 of the postseason guide linked above.
Chattanooga's postseason journey begins Saturday. It's an optimistic trip with the focus on a 12th NCAA DI Basketball Tournament appearance, which would tie the league record with Davidson. Postseason deposits are available for $20 toward tickets to follow this group on a continued journey or it can be applied to 2020-21 season tickets.
The 8:30 p.m., tipoff in Harrah's Cherokee Center Asheville airs on ESPN+ as well over the airwaves locally on WFLI 1070 AM/97.7 FM and the TuneIn app.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
-
Matt Ryan is 11 points shy of the 16th 500-point season in the DI Era (43 years), 24th all-time (99). The last was Z. Mason's 561 in 2013-14. Stephen McDowell, 633 in 2008-09, and Ashley Champion, 544 in 2003-04, are the only other Mocs this century to cross that plateau.
- Two stats of note for this matchup. UNCG leads the nation in TO margin (+6.4/game). The Mocs were +1 in Saturday's win, -7 in January's loss. Chattanooga leads the SoCon in defensive rebound percentage (.764), while the Spartans pace it in offensive rebound percentage (.338). Against UNCG: .671 this year.
-
David Jean-Baptiste needs 7 more points for 400 this season. That would give the Mocs three with 400 or more scored this year: Ryan (489) & Vila (400). Last time with a trio with 400+? 1991-92. Done four times in school history…
1974: Wayne Golden-507, Walter "Moose" McGary-421 & William Gordon-420
1976: Wayne Golden-585, William Gordon-478 & Kevin Gray-454
1989: Daren Chandler-541, Benny Green-412 & Chris Behrends-409
1992: LeVert Threats-472, Keith Nelson-467 & Tim Brooks-427
3 NOTES TO KNOW (Tournament Edition)
- 5-3 against the lower half of the bracket, 5-5 against the other side.
- Jean-Baptiste enjoys the first game of the conference tournament averaging 17.5 ppg and 2.0 apg. He had 18 as a freshman in the first round win over Samford in 2018 and 17 in the narrow quarterfinal loss to ETSU a year ago. He's shooting 72.2 percent overall including 72.7 percent from three in his opening tourney game.
- The Mocs are 23-17 all-time in the quarterfinals, 1-1 in the quarters with the win, oddly enough, coming in Greensboro.
