Mocs Men, Women Fourth at Golden Eagle Invitational

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga men's and women's cross country team placed fourth Friday afternoon at the Golden Eagle Invitational hosted by Tennessee Tech at the Putnam County Sports Complex.

Lesley Green led the women, finishing ninth with a time of 19:20.54 while Jonathan Boyd was the first UTC finisher across the line for the men placing 15th with a time of 26:35.1 in the final tune up for both teams before the Southern Conference Championships in two weeks.

"For the ladies we saw improvement in our race focused efforts," Mocs head coach Andy Meyer said. "Much better race execution of our plan. We still have some things up front to work on, but Lesley, Emma, Makenzie and Morgan all were where they need to be. Faith ran well for coming off an injury and Sydney gave us her usual 100%."

The women placed four runners in the Top 20 with Emma Russum placing 13th overall at 19:44.59. Makenzie Jones finished 16th (19:53.55) and Justine Glass crossed the line 19th overall. Morgan Ouellette was the final scoring runner to finish for Chattanooga with a time of 20:24.56.

The Mocs finished just behind Murray State out outpaced SEMO for fourth.

Jonathan Boyd continued to lead the Mocs finishing the 8-kilometer race in a time of 26:35.1. Ryan Phillips was two spots behind Boyd in 17th overall (26:53.0) and Aaron Isbell recorded a personal best 27:02.5 placing 19th for Chattanooga.

"The guys ran well. They raced according to the plan and progressed through the field as usual," Meyer said. "Jonathan and Ryan both ran well up front for us and two freshman continued making huge gains for us as our 3-4 runners. Every race Eammon and Eric get better and better."

Eammon O'Bryant was the fourth Chattanooga runner to finish with a time of 28:01.2 and Jasper Wilson (29:00.4) was the fifth runner to score for the Mocs.

ETSU's Lindsay Stallworth, the reigning SoCon Runner of the Year, finished well of the field in the women's race. Adam Bradtmueller won the men's race as an unattached runner.

Tennessee Tech won the women's race, outpacing ETSU by 11 points while the Bucs took first in the men's field with 26 points followed by Tennessee Tech with 45.

"Overall, we made important improvement in the mental toughness exhibited for racing," Meyer concluded. "We still need even more but we are getting there."

Chattanooga returns to the pitch in two weeks for the Southern Conference Championships hosted by VMI in Lexington, Va., on October 30.
