CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs softball team saw a late rally fall short in a 10-7 loss to UT Martin in non-conference action inside Jim Frost Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Â
Following the loss, Chattanooga falls to 2-4 overall on the season. UT Martin improves its perfect record to 5-0.
Â
After UT Martin struck in the top of the first with an RBI groundout,
Cameren Swafford answered with a two-run homer in the home half to put the Mocs ahead 2-1. It marked back-to-back games where Swafford belted a two-run shot in the opening frame.
Â
Both teams went scoreless through the second and third innings before the Skyhawks broke things open in the top of the fourth with five runs on four hits to build a 6-2 advantage. Chattanooga committed a pair of errors in the inning that led to four of the five runs being marked as unearned.
Â
UT Martin added to its lead, 10-2, with three runs in the fifth and one in the top of the sixth. UTC fought off the near run-rule decision after a
Gracey Kruse SAC fly and UTM throwing error allowed two runs to score, brining the tally to 10-4.
Â
Chattanooga continued to chip away in the bottom of the seventh and pulled within four at 10-6 after scoring two early runs on a pair of Skyhawk miscues. Swafford added her third RBI of the game to close it to three, but a fly out to center ultimately ended the comeback effort, 10-7.
Â
Kat Thompson (1-1) suffered the loss despite just allowing two earned runs over 3.1 innings of work.
Kylie Coffin, Regan Lowrie and
Hannah Wood all saw relief action in the circle.
Â
Swafford finished 2-for-3 with a homerun, two runs scored and three RBI while
Courtney Ball kept a four-game hit streak alive with a 1-for-4 performance. Kruse recorded an RBI in a 1-for-2 night at the plate.
Â
Chattanooga returns to action tomorrow, Thursday, February 25, to host Tennessee Tech in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. EST. This weekend's originally schedule
Frost Classic has been canceled.
