CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs get their final regular season start at this week's Mountaineer Invitational. The group tackles Pete Dye Golf Club in the final prep work for next week's Southern Conference Championships.
Monday's 36-hole marathon starts at 9 a.m. The shotgun start pairs the Mocs in foursomes with Loyola (Md.) on three different opening holes. A.J. Lintunen and Alex Cobb play with two Greyhounds on the third while Paul Conroy and Connor Nolan are off four. Gabe Hunter and Matt Smith are just ahead on the fifth tee.
The Mocs look to expand on the positive trend of their spring play. They're coming off a third-place finish at Furman and have been in contention on the final day in three of four events with a really strong effort over 36 holes, be it the first 36 or the last, thwarted by a lesser round.
Forty birdies at Furman tied the squad's season high and certainly shows they're on the right track. Lintunen's good run extends to last season averaging 72.26 over his last 35 cards, playing 18 over for 12 events (630 holes). The midseason addition of Paul Conroy added quite a spark.
The Irishman has two top 10s in his first four events which coincides with a surge from Nolan and Cobb bouncing back from a slow starts. Nolan is averaging 72.47 in last 17 cards since the opener at the Honors Course playing 14 over on those 306 holes.
Cobb's improvement is more drastic at 73.33 over the last three tourneys bringing his season average down by nearly four shots. Hunter had his first Mocs top 25 last time out and Smith's 73.67 in last two starts is nearly two-and-half strokes lower than his fall appearances (76.13).
The format is similar to all the fall events with six starters counting the top four scores. Click the scoring link above to follow scores and access pairings when available.
