Track's Improvement Continues on Road to Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's outdoor track team set several personal bests Friday evening or improved their times from earlier this season on Day One of the Georgia Tech Invitational.

"We are very pleased with the girls after Day One," head coach Andy Meyer said. "Everyone seems to be getting into form at exactly the right time."

Six PRs were set Friday beginning with Imani Bryant's 12.57 in the 100 meter dash. Nicole Buehrle led a trio of Mocs with PRs in the 1500 meter Run and the Mocs top two finishers in the 5000 meter, Lesley Green and Emma Russum, out-paced their previous best times.

"Imani ran well with a huge PR," Meyer said. "McKenzie [Williamson] and Kim [Dunning] stayed consistent with their times.

"It sure is nice to have three all under 13 seconds."

Buehrle edged out her previous best time by 1.23 seconds for fourth in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:32.97. Ashtyn Hagood improved by 1.52 seconds and Faith Brown topped her best time set earlier this spring by 1.73 seconds.

"Nicole continues to drop time and ran great in a very fast 1500," Meyer said. "She again made up several places in the last 400 meters.

"Ashtyn and Faith also ran strong, keeping great positions throughout their respective heats."

In the 5000 meter run, Green paced the Mocs with an eighth place finish at 17:52.49, setting a new PR at the distance. Russum placed 10th overall and blew away her previous top time by nearly 12 seconds at 18:00.66. Makenzie Jones saw gains from her early performance this season at UAB, placing 11th overall with a time of 18:06.65. Sophia Neglia placed 16th overall.

"In the 5K all our kids across the board set PRs or improved dramatically from their last 5K," Meyer said. "Lesley, Emma, Makenzie and Sophia all stayed patient and slowly worked through the pack as the torrid pace at the front took its toll on many and the girls ran their own races."

The meet will wrap up Saturday with the 200-, 400- and 800-meter races.
