CHATTANOOGA---Graduate transfer
Josh Ayeni came to Chattanooga with one year of certain eligibility remaining. He finished 2020-21 with another year from the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic and may have yet another if an NCAA waiver for a medical redshirt comes through in the future. But that's what's to come, this is about what we just saw.
Ayeni started 17 of 23 games all coming in the post. His numbers of 5.5 points and 2.3 rebounds came in 13.8 minutes per contest. Those numbers grow to nearly 16 points and seven boards per 40 minutes. It's easy to see he filled his role.
Â
His production came after two injury-filled years. Ayeni was recovering from a lower body injury during his transfer sit out campaign at South Alabama before being limited to eight appearances by the same ailment in 2019-20. So, he had a lot of catching up and getting back into game condition to do.
Â
Ayeni had 14 helping key the game three win over Northern Kentucky. His best production came in an early SoCon loss at The Citadel with 17 points and seven boards that came in a season-high 26.5 minutes. It was just the seventh time in his career he topped 26 minutes and remember, he started 40 of 56 games at Atlantic 10 power Saint Bonaventure.
Â
Looking back on his season, Ayeni mirrored his teammates. There's a regular theme going that purely from the environment this team lives in. He said, "I'd say our win against ETSU at home. That was a moment when our (team) bond grew stronger."
Â
That made this tweet topical. It was used after completing the regular season sweep of the long-time rivals.
Â
Â
This play provides a glimpse at the gritty work he provided. What you don't see is the steal at the started also provided by Ayeni. He ran the floor and positioned himself to finish off a well-defended shot attempt.
