PREVIEW: Indoor Volleyball Travels to Indiana for Hampton Inn Invitational at IUPUI

CHATTANOOGA -- The Chattanooga Mocs' indoor volleyball team will head to Indianapolis, Ind. for their second tournament of the season ­– the Hampton Inn Invitational. The tournament is hosted by IUPUI, who the Mocs will play on Friday, Sept. 3. On Saturday, UTC will face Toledo and Western Illinois.

CHATTANOOGA NOTES

  • UTC enters the weekend at 1-3 this season. 
  • The Mocs opened the season with a four-set win at Georgia State before falling to Memphis and California Baptist to close out the tournament.
  • Gylian Finch leads the team with 44 kills, one in front of fellow four-year teammate, Maia Rackel. Rackel used a season-best 15 kills to eclipse the 500-career mark on Tuesday evening at Jacksonville State. Finch is averaging 3.38 kills per set.
  • Defensively in the back row, Paige Gallentine, leads the way with 4.46 digs per set. At the net, Coniah Davis and Marcelle Baez-Carlo both have 12 blocks with Baez-Carlo averaging one per set.
  • Second-year setter, Sophia Bossong, has recorded two straight double-doubles and leads the team with 9.15 assists per set. She's second on the squad with 41 digs.

IUPUI NOTES

  • The Jaguars are 1-2 to begin the season with their lone win coming in four sets over Bellarmine.
  • Freshman Briana Brown and junior Allie Pogue have led the offense with 37 and 36 kills respectively, leading IUPUI to hit .190 last weekend.
  • Fifth-year senior libero Rhiannon Schuenemann leads the way with 4.50 digs per set.
  • As a team, they average 11.4 kills per set and give up 11.9 while opponents are hitting .213 against them.
  • IUPUI has recorded 17 blocks and 22 aces, they've given up one more of each to their opponents.

WESTERN ILLINOIS NOTES

  •           The Fighting Leathernecks are coming off a 2-15 season last year and are off to an 0-3 start in 2021 after suffering losses to Northern Illinois, William and Mary and CSU Bakersfield.
  • WUI is hitting .175 and averages 11.3 kills per set. The team allows 14.7 kills, 2.0 aces and 2.6 blocks per set.
  •           Mariah Mitchell leads the squad averaging 2.70 kills/set and Jessie Connell posts 5.71 assists/set.

TOLEDO NOTES

  •        The Rockets have the best record of the four teams in the tournament after capturing two wins last weekend. Toledo defeated Elon and Lehigh and fell in three sets at Virginia Tech.
  •        Taylor Alt paces the Rockets offensively with 4.10 kills/set and a .310 attack clip.
  •           As a team, Toledo is hitting .277 and limiting opponents to a .199 clip.
  •       Defensively, they average 2.05 blocks per set and 13.2 digs per set.

SERIES HISTORY
UTC has played just three matches combined against the three Hampton Inn Invitational opponents. It is the first meeting for the team vs. IUPUI. UTC leads the series against WIU 1-0, while Toledo holds a 2-0 edge in the series history over the Mocs.
