CHATTANOOGA---The 19th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs eye a Saturday date with Western Carolina. In the meantime, Chattanooga native McClendon Curtis received some special news almost befitting his large frame.

Curtis was appointed to the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee Student-Athlete Connection Group. His term of service on the committee begins September 23, 2021 and continues through June 30, 2022. He's one of 12 nationwide in all three NCAA divisions to earn the coveted spots.
 
"It's a huge honor for our program," Coach Rusty Wright shared after announcing the appointment to the team following Monday's practice. "It's also a huge honor that shows the kind of people we have in this building. McClendon is very deserving.
 
"He'll be a great ambassador for student-athletes and the NCAA. That's the biggest thing. He understands that and embraces it."
 
It's not something Curtis takes likely. Linemate Cole Strange mentioned how connected McClendon is, and the big man from Chattanooga Central appreciated that notion.
 
"This is an opportunity I was given to represent all FCS student-athletes, but most importantly my guys as well," Curtis began. "There are 12 of us representing FBS, FCS, DII and DIII. It's a chance to be in front of the NCAA Council and share what's going on in our world.
 
"It's very humbling. When Ms. (Laura) Herron asked me if I would be interested, it showed me there are more opportunities to be more than just a football player. That really hit me and excited me for what this could be.
 
"I hope to learn from our group and share what we need to do, what we need to work on to make this game even better. It's also important for me making connections not just within the game but also in life."
 
Curtis already gives back to his campus. He's graduated and came to his interview for this piece from working with a First Year Experience Class. First Year Experience is a cross-campus collaborative effort designed to welcome, support and connect first-year students to the campus community and resources.
 
He has served as a tutor for the Mocs Student-Athlete Enhancement Center. Curtis is a Dean's List student working on his Master's in School/Teacher Leadership.
