McClendon Leads Mocs in Win Over Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- Freshmen Destiny McClendon and Addie Grace Porter combined for 29 points off the bench to lead Chattanooga to a 63-47 win over Western Carolina in Southern Conference women's basketball action at the Ramsey Center.
 
McClendon led all scorers with a career-high 17 points. She was 4-of-5 from the 3-point line and 5-for-6 from the stripe. Porter had 12 points and led the Mocs with a career-best seven rebounds and snared four steals.
 
Dena Jarrells was the third Chattanooga player in double figures, making 3-of-4 from long range for 13 points on the day.
 
Chattanooga got out to a 19-3 first quarter lead and capped off an 18-0 scoring run early in the second quarter to lead 21-3 at the 9:38 mark of the period.
 
Brooke Hampel hit the Mocs first 3-pointer of the game to get the scoring started. Western Carolina responded with a trey of its own to tie the game and wouldn't score again for the next 9:10.
 
Amaria Pugh got the run started with a jumper at the 8:17 mark of the first and Leah Jones capped it off with a layup 22 seconds into the second quarter. Six different players scored in the run for Chattanooga led by five from Porter and the Mocs forced seven turnovers.
 
The Mocs saw its largest lead, 29-5 on a 3-pointer from McClendon at the 7:40 mark of the second quarter and carried a 34-17 lead into halftime. Chattanooga's lead would not drop below 15 points the rest of the way.
 
Western Carolina shot its best in the final period making 7-of-15 and was 7-of-8 from the free throw line to outscore UTC 21-14 in the frame to make it a 16-point game at the end.
 
The Mocs shot a season-high from 3-point range and had its third-best performance at the charity stripe. UTC was 21-of-52 (40.4%) from the field and 11-of-19 (57.9%) from range while making 10-of-12 free throws.
 
Western Carolina outrebounded the Mocs 39-29 and scored 11 second chance points on 12 offensive boards. Zanoria Cruz, with nine points in the fourth quarter, led the Cats with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Tembre Moates just missed a double-double with 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Andrea Martin Ruiz added 10 points and seven boards.
 
The Mocs scored 21 points off 20 WCU miscues and gave up seven on its own 14 turnovers. The Catamounts outscored UTC 26-18 in the paint and 8-6 on fast break points.
 
Burrows cleared the bench early and often getting quality minutes for all 10 available players.
 
Chattanooga returns home next week to close out the regular season. Thursday's matchup against Furman will honor all those who have survived or lost their battle with cancer. Cancer survivors get in free to the game and family members receive a discounted ticket. The game is set to tip off at 7:00 p.m.
 
Prior to Saturday's 1:30 p.m. tip off against Wofford, the Mocs will honor senior Pare Pene. It will be the first of a double-header with the men's team who will also honor its seniors prior to the game.
