Two-Out Hitting Propels Softball to Doubleheader Sweep over Georgia State

Mocs down Panthers 5-3 in game one, 5-1 in game two

CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs' softball team swept the visiting Georgia State Panthers at Frost Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Blue and Gold won game one, 5-3 before a 5-1 victory in game two with two home runs.  

Chattanooga moved to 13-12 while Georgia State dropped to 8-16.

The Mocs return to Frost Stadium on Friday, March 18 for day one of the Chatty's Patty's. First pitch vs. Bucknell is set for 3 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Georgia State got the scoring started with three runs in the first, including one earned run. They had two hits and scored one on an error.

The Mocs were able to get one run back with an Acelynn Sellers single in the bottom half, which scored Emily Coltharp.

Chattanooga left runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth inning and then with two outs in the sixth, the team loaded the bases. Sellers came through with a bases-clearing double to the left field wall to give the Mocs their first lead of the game.

Hannah Wood retired the side in the top of the seventh to pick up her second win of the season, defeating the Panthers 5-3. Wood entered the game in the first and tossed 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out two without walking a batter.

Sellers and Kaili Phillips both had two hits in the contest. Sellers' four RBI tied a season-high by a Moc in a game this season.

  • Sellers leads the team with five multi-RBI games, all have come in the last nine contests.
  • Coltharp extended her on-base and hit streak to five games. Olivia Lipari extended her on-base streak to seven.
  • The game is the third that Chattanooga has won after trailing through five innings (now 3-9).
  • It is the first time Wood has pitched more than six innings in relief in her career Additionally, she struck out two.
GAME TWO RECAP
Once again, the Panthers got on the board in the first, scoring on an RBI groundout.

The Mocs took the lead a lot quicker in game two as Adison Keylon hit a three-run homer over the center field wall with two outs in the bottom of the second to give Chattanooga a 3-1 advantage.

In the fourth, again with two away, Lipari went yard for the third time this season, hitting a two-run homer to left to put UTC up 5-1.

Izzy Alley tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out three.

Coltharp had a two-hit game, while Keylon drove in three runs and Lipari had two RBI.

  • UTC now has seven home runs with two outs this season and the team broke a streak of six straight homers with no one on base.
  • Keylon netted three or more RBI in a game for the third time in her career.
  • Coltharp's hit streak is now at six games, a season high.
  • Alley's complete game is the third of the season for the freshman.
  • The Mocs entered the day with two come-from-behind wins. After the Tuesday doubleheader, they doubled that number.
Series history:
Chattanooga improves to 18-16 all-time against Georgia State and broke the Panthers' eight game win streak against the Mocs which dated back to 2011.
