CHATTANOOGA – The Chattanooga Mocs' softball team fell to the visiting Furman Paladins on Sunday afternoon, 7-5 at Frost Stadium. The two teams combined for five errors and just two of Furman's seven runs scored were earned.
Chattanooga dropped to 18-15 overall and 2-1 in SoCon action, while Furman improved to 10-17, 1-2.
The Mocs return to Frost Stadium next weekend to host in-state rival ETSU for a three-game series. The Mocs and the Bucs will start the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE RECAP
Chattanooga opened the scoring for the second time this weekend as
Liz Rodebaugh drove in
Acelynn Sellers in the second inning with a sacrifice fly. In the third,
Kailey Snell doubled the Mocs lead with an RBI groundout to short, scoring
Jayce Purdy.
Furman got on the board in the fourth with a single up the middle. An inning later, the Paladins took the lead with runners on the corners after executing a double steal and scoring on a throwing error.
In the fifth, Chattanooga regained its lead, scoring a run on a bases-loaded walk and groundout.
The Paladins capitalized on another Chattanooga miscue in the sixth. After a throwing error kept the inning alive with two outs, Furman scored two on an RBI double and followed that up with a two-run homer in the next at-bat.
The Mocs had two on and no outs in the sixth and the seventh but were unable to get more than one run across, falling to the Paladins, 7-5.
Izzy Alley started the game in the circle for the Mocs and tossed four innings, allowing one run on five hits with a strikeout and a walk.
Alyssa Lavdis picked up the loss, allowing six runs, just one earned, on four hits with a punch out and two walks.
Emily Coltharp and Snell, the Mocs' first two batters went 2-for-4 and both scored a run.
Furman's top three hitters went 5-for-10 with four runs and four RBI.
