Softball Drops Two at Samford, 3-0, 3-2

Reagan Armour blasts seventh-inning home run to force extras for second time this season

Birmingham, Ala – The Chattanooga Mocs' softball team was unable to spoil Samford's senior day on Saturday afternoon, dropping two games in Birmingham, 3-0 and 3-2 at the Samford Softball Field.  

Chattanooga dropped to 21-22 overall and 5-6 in Southern Conference play, while Samford improved to 25 -15, 10-1 SoCon.

The two teams wrap up the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. EST.

GAME 1 RECAP
After a leadoff walk, Samford got a pair of runs on the board in the opening frame with back-to-back two-out doubles.

In the second inning, Samford executed a double steal with runners on the corners and scored on a Chattanooga throwing error to extend its lead.

In the fifth, the Mocs had two on for the first time in the contest with no outs after an Adison Keylon bunt single. Samford got out of the jam without allowing a run, not allowing the Mocs to execute another sacrifice bunt with no outs as Chattanooga ended up stranding two in scoring position.

The Mocs were unable to get a run across as Samford's McKenzie Newcomb secured her sixth complete-game shutout of the season.

Acelynn Sellers led the Mocs with two hits. Keylon, Reagan Armour and Liz Rodebaugh added the other hits for Chattanooga. Hannah Wood threw her second complete game of the season. She went six innings and allowed three runs, two earned on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout. 

Newcomb tossed seven shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out five with one walk.

Notable:
  • The contest was Sellers' eighth multi-hit game of the season and first since April 2 against ETSU.
  • Chattanooga was shutout for just the second time this season and first since losing 0-1 to Northwestern State on Opening Day.

GAME 2 RECAP
After Brooke Parrott kept the Bulldogs hitless through the first three innings, the hosts got into the hit and run column with one swing in the fourth. Merritt Cahoon hit her second home run of the season just off the top of the wall in left.

Later that inning, Kolby Holcombe drove in the second run of the game with a sacrifice fly later that inning.

In the sixth, Kailey Snell notched the first extra-base hit of the game for Chattanooga, a two-out triple to wall in left center. She later scored on a base hit to center off the bat of Olivia Lipari.

In the seventh, Reagan Armour took the first pitch she saw down the line in left to tie the game.

After neither team scored after putting a runner in scoring position in the eighth, the Bulldogs capitalized on a leadoff walk and a wild pitch, winning the game on a walk-off double off the bat of Sarah Squillace.

Snell led the Mocs with a 2-for-4 game. Armour and Keylon recorded the other hits for Chattanooga.

Parrott started the game, going 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks, Izzy Alley entered in relief. She was given the loss, throwing 4.2 frames and allowed one run on two hits with four free passes.

Samford's Jordyn Partain tossed all nine innings. She allowed two runs on five hits with seven K's and a walk.
