Softball Falls in Series Finale to Samford

Birmingham, Ala – The Chattanooga Mocs' softball team suffered a 4-1 setback to the Samford Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala. at the Samford Softball Field on Sunday afternoon.

Chattanooga dropped to 21-23 overall and 5-7 in Southern Conference play, while Samford improved to 26 -15, 11-1 SoCon.

Chattanooga returns home this weekend to face Mercer in a three-game series. The Mocs and Bears begin the series on Saturday with a doubleheader; first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Emily Coltharp began the game with a leadoff double down the left field line and after Kailey Snell moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, Acelynn Sellers gave Chattanooga its first lead of the series with a single to left.

In the second inning, after a leadoff hit-by-pitch, Samford blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead. Samford doubled its lead in the third with a two out double and a single to right in the next at bat. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the next half inning on a Chattanooga fielding error.

After the fourth, neither team was able to score as Samford held on to its 4-1 lead.

Brooke Parrott started the game and allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work. She struck out two and hit a batter. Hannah Wood entered in the second and allowed two runs, one earned in 1.2 innings of action. Izzy Alley tossed the final 2.1 innings. She didn't allow a run to cross the plate and gave up just one hit.

Seven different Mocs recorded a hit. Coltharp, Reagan Armour and Liz Rodebaugh all garnered a double. Snell led the squad with two hits.

Samford's McKenzie Newcomb earned her second complete-game victory of the weekend. In seven innings, she allowed eight hits and just one run with four strikeouts and no walks.
