CHATTANOOGA---The day is here. The NCAA Norman Regionals starts Monday with Chattanooga Mocs sophomore Paul Conroy tackling the 75-player field. He and his fellow student-athletes take on Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla., Monday through Wednesday in the 3-day, 54-hole event.
Conroy is the third Moc to earn an individual berth in school history and first since 2016. The team went eight straight seasons from 2007-14. His is the fourth individual bid in school history joining Neil Connolly (1992 & 1993) and Wes Gosselin (2016).
Conroy joins 13 teams and nine other individuals vying to qualify for the NCAA Championships May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The tourney's full field features six regions with a total of 81 teams and 60 individuals working toward a final list of 30 squads and six players.
In an interesting twist, he has a veteran coach by his side who has been through all the highs and lows of postseason play. With the Mocs coaching search in full swing, so to speak, Conroy asked women's head coach Colette Murray to come along. She was in suburban Nashville last week with her own NCAA individual qualifier Dorota Zalewska who wasn't far off moving forward herself during the week. Murray led her squad to the finals in 2009 and nearly moved an individual on in 2011. Her group has seven team selections and five individuals since she started the program in 2007-08.
This week is a fine line for Conroy. The top five teams clear that first hurdle with the lone individual from one of the non-advancing squads earning the final spot. The Mocs made the grade in 2009 for the first time as a team, also in Oklahoma at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, and in 2012 winning the Bowling Green Regionals. Connolly made the finals in 1993, while Chris Robb did as well in 2014 in a playoff in Eugene under the same format earning All-America status tying for 15th at the next stop.
Hear from the Conroy and Coach Murray on their outlook heading into this week's event...
