GAME WEEK: Preview for Saturday at Eastern Illinois

Preston Hutchinson

Preston Hutchinson and the Chattanooga Mocs are headed on the road for the first time this season to take on a difficult challenge in Eastern Illinois.

MONDAY PRIMER | TUESDAY PRESSER | SCHEDULE | TICKETS

CHATTANOOGA---It's a different kind of game week for the 10th-ranked Chattanooga Mocs. Week 2 is the first road trip of the season for a team looking forward to a getaway.

Both CaMiron Smith and Jay Gibson spoke yesterday in the presser link above about how much they enjoy being on the road. There are fewer distractions. This is also a very "together" group so the team bonding aspect they talked about is very much at play. Give it a listen.

This is also not the same Eastern Illinois squad the Mocs faced in Coach Rusty Wright's first game as head coach in 2019. Not even close as this Panthers squad nearly upset reigning MAC Champions Northern Illinois on the road last week and is now among others receiving votes in the AFCA FCS Coaches Top 25.

"They've got players at every level," Wright began. "You watch them play against Northern Illinois, you'll see the passion and intensity with which they play. We will have our hands full when we get there Saturday night."

There are a lot of feel goods from Week 1 that are in the rearview mirror now. All that matters is this week. As Smith noted yesterday, "Every week we are 0-0".

24-10 win in Chattanooga on August 29, 2019: STORY | STATS | NOTES | QUOTES
- The Mocs put up 350 yards on 60 plays (5.8), while EIU posted 354 yards on 83 plays (4.3).
- The Mocs win a season-opener against an FCS opponent for the second year in a row…first time UTC has opened with wins over an FCS opponent in back-to-back seasons since 2005 and 2006.
- Ty Boeck had a (then) career-high six tackles.
- Colin Brewer averaged 43.2 yards per six punt attempts...long of 55 yards was longest since a 60-yarder against Western Carolina in 2016.
- Marshall Cooper had a game-high 10 tackles...4th time with 10+ tackles...two PBUs in a game for the first time.

3 NOTES TO KNOW
  • The Mocs ran for 190 or more yards 15 times in 29 games under Rusty Wright including nine of the last 11. Last week (196) was done behind an offensive line with four new starters on it and the one returner (McClendon Curtis) moving from right guard to left tackle.
  • Averaged 7.20 yards per play (51-367) in Saturday's win. It's the fifth time since start of 2019 season averaging 7.0 or more yards per play. The high is 8.18 (72-589) against Western Carolina in 2019.
  • The defense continues its opportunistic ways with three takeaways (2 fumbles & 1 interception) in week one (+2 turnover margin). It was the 17th time in the Rusty Wright era with multiple takeaways. That includes claiming three or more nine times including the 2019 meeting with EIU (2 fumble/1 INT). 11-5 when creating multiple takeaways and 5-2 when +2 or better on takeaways. The two fumble recoveries against Wofford came in red zone stops.
