SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Chattanooga Mocs women's tennis senior Jessie Young has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week following her perfect efforts last week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Young went a perfect 2-0 during Chattanooga's 5-2 victory on the road at WKU on Friday. She picked up a win at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles to help lift the Mocs to its fourth-straight 2-0 start to the season.
"This is a big achievement in the SoCon. We have a very competitive conference and Jessie is aimed to finish her senior season on top," said head coach Chad Camper. "Her best tennis is still ahead of her."
Young's SoCon Player of the Week selection is the first for a Moc since Emma Van Hee earned the weekly honor on February 25 of 2020. She becomes just the fifth different Moc to win the award since the beginning of the 2017 season.
The Canton, Ga., native earned a hard-fought 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over WKU's Sayda Hernandez in No. 2 singles on Friday. The win followed a smooth 6-4 victory over Hernandez and Paola Cortez
at the No. 1 doubles position alongside teammate Caroline Gibbens.
Chattanooga (2-0) opens the home slate this weekend when it hosts Lee University on Sunday, January 29, at 6 p.m. ET. The match is expected to be held at the McCallie School's Strang-Voges Tennis Center. All match information will be available on the schedule page leading up to first serve.
