50 Seasons of Greatness, An Oral History of Chattanooga Women's Basketball: Episode 3: Coach Wes Moore

With a new century comes new achievements.

Wes Moore came onto the scene in 1998 bringing with him success from Maryville College and Francis Marion. He continued that success at Chattanooga claiming 12 Southern Conference regular season titles and advanced to the postseason 13 times in his 15 seasons at the helm, including nine NCAA Tournament appearances. He is the only coach in NCAA history to take three teams from each division to the NCAA Tournament and one of at least three (Kellie Harper, Jim Foster) to take four teams to the NCAA postseason.

The biggest change for Chattanooga during Moore's tenure was the move from Big Mac to the Roundhouse. From the cozy confines of Maclellan, the Mocs made The McKenzie Arena home and have filled it with fans ever since including more than 10,000 to cheer on the Mocs against Top Five Tennessee.

Moore won 358 games at Chattanooga and celebrated his 500th career win at the Roundhouse. He brought teams from the SEC and ACC to play at McKenzie and shocked the nation with wins over such teams as Tennessee and Rutgers as well as Louisville, Florida State, Clemson, Alabama and Auburn – just to name a few.

That success led him back to N.C. State where he spent two seasons (1993-95) with legendary coach Kay Yow. He has continued to make headlines with the Wolfpack.

While highly successful on the court, Moore is remembered at Chattanooga for his time off the court as well. Trips to Hawaii and Cancun as well as all corners of the country were sometimes the first time many traveled by airplane. Snowball fights and sledding in Boone, N.C., created special memories that last a lifetime.

TITLE IX ENABLES WOMEN EQUALITY IN SPORT

50 SEASONS OF CHATTANOOGA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The 2023 season for the Chattanooga women's basketball team marks a major landmark for the program and the university, as UTC women's basketball officially celebrates its 50th season of competition as a university sponsored athletic program. Following the adoption of the Title IX legislation back in 1972, UTC added women's basketball, tennis and volleyball programs to its roster of athletic teams, bringing on five decades of history and success for each of the teams. Chattanooga WBB will be putting on multiple promotions and content pieces throughout the 2023-24 season to celebrate the program's history, culminating in the team hosting its 50th Season Celebration and Reunion during the Mocs' February 3 matchup against Furman at McKenzie Arena.
