Men’s Basketball Welcomes League-Leading Samford for Wednesday Night Clash on Senior Night

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team will look to improve on its standing in the league as the regular season features just two games left.

CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team looks to bounce back from Saturday's defeat with a Wednesday night matchup against the Southern Conference's current front runner Samford inside McKenzie on Senior Night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Chattanooga (15-14, 7-9 SoCon) aims to respond from seeing its three-game win streak snapped in a 93-76 loss to second place UNCG on Saturday. Following the loss, the Mocs currently sit in a tie with Wofford for fifth place in the league standings at 7-9 with two games remaining. The top six teams avoid the Friday slate at next week's Southern Conference Championships in Asheville, N.C.

Jamal Johnson provided the spark on Saturday and set a career-high in scoring for the second time in as many weeks after finishing with 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting including a 6-of-11 mark from deep. Demetrius Davis also busted out for a new career mark after posting 20 points with 16 coming in the second half on the help of four triples.

Samford (20-9, 14-2 SoCon) heads into the contest on Wednesday sole leaders in the Southern Conference regular season standings and are winners of its last six games with its last loss coming at Wofford back on January 28. The first matchup between Samford and Chattanooga ended in a 75-74 heartbreaker for the Mocs as the squad saw a 19-point second half lead disappear before a Jake Stephens game-winning three attempt clanked the front iron at the buzzer.

LAST TIME OUT
Chattanooga (15-14, 7-9 SoCon) saw its three-game winning streak snapped in a 93-76 loss to UNCG on Saturday afternoon inside McKenzie Arena. The 93 points were the most allowed to an opponent this season. The loss puts UTC in a tie for fifth place in the league standings with Wofford. Jamal Johnson finished with a career-high 28 points on the help of six threes on Saturday.

NCAA RECORD SET... AGAIN
Chattanooga tied its own NCAA Division I record with 10 different players connecting on at least one 3PT during Wednesday's win at VMI. The Mocs have now accomplished the feat twice after setting the benchmark in a win over Covenant back in November.

SENIOR NIGHT IN THE ROUNDHOUSE
UTC will honor seven players during Senior Night festivities ahead of Wednesday's game against Samford. The Mocs will celebrate AJ Caldwell, KC Hankton, Ashton Smith, Grant Ledford, Jake Stephens, Jamal Johnson & Dalvin White.

ONE MORE WIN WOULD...
Sitting at 15-14 overall this season, Chattanooga needs just one more win for head coach Dan Earl to tie his career-high for wins in a season. Earl led SoCon foe VMI to a 16-16 record in 2021-22 before arriving to the Scenic City.

LET THE THREE FLY
Chattanooga fired off 41 three-point attempts in Wednesday's win at VMI which marked the most for the team this season. The 41 attempts were the most since a program-record 44 attempts at Georgia State on Dec. 12, 2018. UTC ranks second in NCAA DI with 30.4 3PT attempts per game.

EARL EFFECT FROM DEEP
Chattanooga (11.6 - 1st), Cornell (10.9- T3rd), and Penn State (10.9 - T3rd) rank among the nation's top three-point shooting teams. Cornell is led by Dan Earl's younger brother Brian while Penn State is Earl's alma mater (1997).

STEPHENS REACHES CAREER MILESTONE FEW ACHIEVE
Graduate transfer Jake Stephens became just the 23rd player in NCAA Division I basketball over the past 25 season to accomplish a certain feat. Stephens surpassed 1,800 career points, 900 career rebounds and 200 career blocks following last week's contest against Furman. Stephens is the active leader in the Southern Conference in career points (1,851), rebounds (934), blocked shots (200), assists (355) and 3-point FGs made (231).
