Men’s Basketball Wraps Up Regular Season at Wofford in Key SoCon Finale on Saturday Night

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team controls its own destiny with one game to play to finish among the top six and earn an automatic spot in Saturday’s quarterfinal round next weekend.

CHATTANOOGA --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team wraps up regular season play with a crucial Southern Conference matchup against Wofford on Saturday night inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

Following Wednesday's defeat, Chattanooga (15-15, 7-10 SoCon) finds themselves locked in a three-way tie for fifth place in the SoCon league standings with Wofford (15-15, 7-10 SoCon) and ETSU (11-19, 7-10 SoCon).

With March looming, it's time to play the "what if?" game when it comes to seeding, tiebreakers, etc. Factoring in Saturday's UTC and Wofford battle, a few scenarios are listed out here.

- With a UTC win & ETSU loss, UTC earns the No. 5 seed and ETSU earns the No. 6 based on H2H w/ WOF.
- With a UTC win & ETSU win, UTC earns the No. 6 seed based on ETSU beating No. 3 UNCG once.
- With a UTC loss & ETSU loss, UTC earns the No. 6 seed based on UTC beating No. 4 WCU once.

The difference between the No. 5 and No. 7 seed is quite drastic when it comes to the SoCon Tournament. The No. 7-No. 10 seeds will be forced to play on Friday night in the First-Round matchups in hopes to advance to the Quarterfinals on Saturday.

Wofford is coming off a tough 87-83 OT loss at VMI Wednesday night as the Terriers saw a 10-point lead with two minutes remaining in regulation evaporate. The Terriers defeated the Mocs earlier this season 85-80 inside McKenzie Arena.

Wednesday's game at Wofford can be streamed LIVE on ESPN+ through the WatchESPN and ESPN App platforms. Fans may tune in or listen on WFLI 96.1 FM/100.3FM/1070 AM in Chattanooga as well as the Varsity Network app. Live stats are also available on GoMocs.com.

LAST TIME OUT
Chattanooga (15-15, 7-10 SoCon) and league-leading Samford exchanged lead changes 20 times and saw nine ties as the visiting Bulldogs captured a 75-70 win on Wednesday night inside McKenzie Arena. Following the loss, the Mocs find themselves in a three-way tie for fifth place with one game remaining. Jamal Johnson scored 21 points while Dalvin White added 16 in the defeat.

LETTING THE THREE FLY
Chattanooga fired off 41 three-point attempts in back-to-back Wednesday contests, one at VMI last week and one at home against Samford. The 41 attempts are the most since a program-record 44 attempts at Georgia State on Dec. 12, 2018. UTC ranks first in NCAA DI with 30.8 3PT attempts per game.

NCAA RECORD SET... AGAIN
Chattanooga tied its own NCAA Division I record with 10 different players connecting on at least one 3PT during Wednesday's win at VMI. The Mocs have now accomplished the feat twice after setting the benchmark in a win over Covenant back in November.

SENIOR SEVEN
UTC honored seven players during Wednesday's game against Samford. The Mocs celebrated seniors AJ Caldwell, KC Hankton, Ashton Smith, Grant Ledford, Jake Stephens, Jamal Johnson & Dalvin White.

ONE MORE WIN WOULD...
Sitting at 15-15 overall this season, Chattanooga needs just one more win for head coach Dan Earl to tie his career-high for wins in a season. Earl led SoCon foe VMI to a 16-16 record in 2021-22 before arriving to the Scenic City.

EARL EFFECT FROM DEEP
Chattanooga (11.5 - 1st), Cornell (10.9- T3rd), and Penn State (10.9 - T3rd) rank among the nation's top three-point shooting teams. Cornell is led by Dan Earl's younger brother Brian while Penn State is Earl's alma mater (1997).

STEPHENS REACHES CAREER MILESTONE FEW ACHIEVE
Graduate transfer Jake Stephens became just the 23rd player in NCAA Division I basketball over the past 25 season to accomplish a certain feat. Stephens surpassed 1,800 career points, 900 career rebounds and 200 career blocks following last week's contest against Furman. Stephens is the active leader in the Southern Conference in career points (1,851), rebounds (934), blocked shots (200), assists (355) and 3-point FGs made (231).
