Softball Holds Off GWU; Mount Come Back Win Over SHU

The Mocs held off Gardner-Webb Saturday and earn a come-from-behind win over Sacred Heart.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- Chattanooga came away with a pair of victories Saturday at the Red and Black Classic hosted by Gardner-Webb. The Mocs held off host Gardner-Webb for a 3-2 win in the first game. Presley Williamson powered UTC past Sacred Heart in the night cap with a three-run shot in the sixth.
 
The Mocs improve to 8-4 overall and have won three this weekend. Taylor Long improves to 3-0, Peja Goold earned her first save and Brooke Parrott picked up her second win (2-1) of the year coming on in relief against Sacred Heart. Chattanooga's four pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts in the two games with Long accounting for nine and gave up six runs on nine hits.
 
Chattanooga 3, Gardner-Webb 2
With a scoreless deadlock through four innings, Presley Williamson opened the fifth with a walk. Shayna Glass entered to run for Williamson and was immediately moved to second on an error by the third baseman allowing Riley Kokinda to reach.
 
Addy Keylon laid down a bunt to move the runners into scoring position and Emily Coltharp scorched a hit to right field, plating both runners and ending up on second on the throw. Zoe Wright's single up the middle got Coltharp around the bags to put the Mocs up 3-0.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs made it a game, scoring a pair of runs. Gardner-Webb drew a pair of walks to start the inning. A ground out to first advanced the runners and another walk loaded the bases for the third time in the game.
 
Taylor Long returned to the circle in place of Peja Goold who came on in relief in the fourth. Long struck out the first batter she faced, but the next popped the ball up into shallow centerfield to score a pair of runs and threaten the Mocs lead.
 
Long struck out the next batter to get out of the inning and Chattanooga retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
 
Coltharp was 1-of-3 in the game and had two RBI while Wright was 1-of-3 with one RBI.

After falling behind 4-1, the Mocs put together a four-run sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh for their third straight win.
               
Chattanooga scored first against the Pioneers on a single up the middle from Olivia Lipari in the top of the third. Addy Keylon started the inning hit by the pitch and advanced to second on a putout at first. Zoe Wright singled and advanced to second on the throw trying to get Keylon out at third.
 
Lipari singled up the middle scoring Keylon, but Wright was thrown out at home by the centerfielder.
 
In the bottom of the fourth Sacred Heart took a 4-1 lead that included a three-run shot to left field.
 
Chattanooga came back in the top of the sixth to retake the lead and not give it up. The Mocs loaded the bases on three straight singles from Wright, Lipari and Sellers. Anna Dovey reached on a fielder's choice and scored Wright from third and advancing Lipari to third.
 
With two outs, Presley Williamson cranked a three-run shot to left field to clear the bases and give the Mocs a 5-4 lead.
 
Chattanooga added an insurance run in the seventh when Wright doubled to send Coltharp home from second.
 
Wright was 4-for-4 with a double and RBI. Williamson had three RBI in the game and was 1-for 3 with a home run.
 
Brooke Parrott picked up the win in four innings in relief. She had five strikeouts.
