GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The Chattanooga softball team came away with a series sweep Sunday in nine innings at Furman, beating the Paladins 5-4 in Greenville, S.C.
Addy Keylon led off the ninth inning with a single and took second on a throwing error back to the pitcher. She took third on shrewd running on a ground out to third by
Jayce Purdy. She held up long enough for the throw to first and made it back before the ball, standing at third with just one out.
Presley Williamson hit to second and a fielding error allowed her to reach. Keylon raced home on the fumble for the go ahead run.
Furman went three up, three down to end the game.
The game got off to a good start for the Mocs with a lead-off home run from
Kaili Phillips, her second in as many games and ninth of the season.
Taylor Long struck out five over the first three innings and stranded four to keep the Mocs 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Mocs added a pair of runs on a single.
Emily Coltharp singled to advance Phillips to second. The pair moved up a base on a wild pitch and
Olivia Lipari's single to right field scored both to make it 3-0 in Chattanooga's favor.
Furman added two runs in the bottom of inning scoring on a passed ball and wild pitch, cutting UTC's lead to 3-2. A third Paladin run scored in the sixth on an error, tying the game 3-3.
With the bases loaded, Williamson sent a single into center field, scoring Sellers.
Anna Dovey reached on a fielder's choice, but a runner's interference sent Keylon back to third and made it two outs with the bags full. A foul out ended the threat for the Mocs who led 4-3.
Furman doubled home a run in the bottom of the frame to deep left field to tie it up with two outs, but UTC would get the next out to send it into extra innings.
Both teams stranded a runner in the eighth, taking it into the ninth where Chattanooga got the go ahead run and didn't allow a base runner in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Phillips was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Lipari was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Alyssa Lavdis picked up her sixth win and second of the weekend. She struck out two, walked a pair and gave up one earned run in 5.1 innings pitched.
Chattanooga closes out the regular season with a three-game set next weekend at Frost Stadium. The Mocs improve to 24-22 overall and 7-8 in Southern Conference action. The Paladins drops to 20-29 on the year and 8-9 against the league.
