NOGALES, Mexico --- Standout middle blocker Marcelle Baez-Carlo of the Chattanooga Mocs volleyball team came away with the title of Second-Best Blocker at last week's 2023 NORCECA U-21 Women's Pan American Cup.
Playing for her home country of Puerto Rico, the rising junior served as team captain for her home nation's U-21 squad, helping to lead the team to a fifth place finish and 3-3 record on the week. This is the second consecutive year in which Baez-Carlo has taken home Second-Best Blocker honors from the Pan American Cup.
This marks yet another international stint for Baez-Carlo, having represented Puerto Rico at the U-20 Pan American Cup in Peru, the U-18 Pan Am Cup in Mexico and the U-18 World Volleyball Championship in Egypt, among other events.
Baez-Carlo enters what will be her third year playing with the Mocs, coming off of a sophomore season in which she led the team in hitting percentage (.277) while also ranking third on the team with a 0.83 blocks per set average. The Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, native has appeared in a total of 48 matches over her collegiate playing career.
As a business finance major, Baez-Carlo carries a 3.53 GPA in the classroom and has been a frequent member on the Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll during her time at UTC. She also was named Academic All-Southern Conference for the first time of her career last fall.
