CHATTANOOGA---Chattanooga Mocs senior
Ailym Ford is one of the top running backs in the country. He not only proves it on the field every Saturday he takes the turf, but off it as well. Once again, he's on the watch list for the
Walter Payton Award presented by FedEx Ground.
Â
Ford, a 2022 finalist and 2021 watch list member, is entering his fifth year in the program, fourth full season after a 1-game cameo in the shortened 2020-21 campaign. In the previous three complete campaigns, he has 1,000-yard ledgers. That makes Ford the only rusher in school history with the trifecta.
Â
"No doubt," Coach
Rusty Wright shared. "He's one of the best backs in the country in every aspect of playing the game. He's earned every bit of recognition he's gotten."
Â
Ford already holds several records during his time in the Scenic City and has eyes on more. His 18 100-yard rushing games easily eclipse that mark and his 32 rushing TDs are the most by a running back but 11 short of his target. He needs 658 yards and 11 rushing TDs to match former quarterback Jacob Huesman's program records of 4,051 yards and 43 scores.
Â
Ford is joined on the watch list by Southern Conference rivals Michael Heirs (QB, Samford), Dominic Roberto (RB, Furman), Devron Harper (WR, Mercer) and Ty James (WR, Mercer). The Walter Payton Award is an annual honor representing the FCS Offensive Player of the Year. It's named for one of the NFL's all-time leading people and alum of Jackson State.
Â
The Mocs open the season Sept. 2 at North Alabama.
