CHATTANOOGA (Jan. 20, 2024) --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team is set for a crucial Southern Conference road contest at in-state rival ETSU inside Freedom Hall in Johnson City, Tenn., on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3:05 p.m. and will be nationally televised on ESPN2/ESPN+.
Chattanooga (11-7, 3-2 SoCon) is coming off a solid performance Wednesday night at Mercer where the squad rebounded from last weekend's defeat with a 74-60 victory in Macon. The Mocs were fueled by a season-high 27 points from
Trey Bonham and a stingy defensive effort down the stretch in which the unit held the Bears without a field goal for a five-plus minute stretch in crunch time.
ETSU (9-9, 1-4 SoCon) will look to snap a four-game SoCon skid on Sunday after opening the conference slate with an 80-69 over Mercer two weeks ago. Three of the four-straight defeats for the Bucs came on the road with the most recent occurring at Wofford (L, 73-75) on Wednesday night. ETSU features three scorers in Jaden Seymour (15.0), Ebby Asamoah (14.8) and Quimari Peterson (14.1) who are averaging over 14 points-per-game this season.

GAME NOTES
Chattanooga ∙ ETSU ∙ SoCon
MOCS REBOUND AT MERCER WITH 74-60 WIN
- Chattanooga (11-7, 3-2 SoCon) rebounded from last Saturday's loss to UNCG with a hard-fought 74-60 win at Mercer on Wednesday night in Macon. UTC broke away from the tightly-contested battle with a strong defensive effort down the stretch, holding the Bears without a field goal for five-plus minutes in crunch time.
Trey Bonham supplied an electric offensive effort, dropping a season-high 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting.
CHATTANOOGA/ETSU HISTORY
- Chattanooga & ETSU will meet for the 98th time in its illustrious rivalry series that originated on December 15, 1961. A series that features a streak of runs, UTC has claimed wins in five of the last seven meetings after ETSU earned 10-straight wins spanning from 1/28/2017 to 2/5/2020. UTC leads overall 52-46, but is 18-25 on the road.
HISTORIC THREE-POINT STREAK SNAPPED IN WEDNESDAY'S WIN
- Chattanooga saw its historic three-point streak of six or more in a game come to an end during Wednesday's win at Mercer after finishing one shy (5-20). The streak came to an end at 52-straight games, which was every game under
Dan Earl at UTC, and closes as the 10th-longest such streak in NCAA DI history. However, an Earl-led squad has now made five or more 3PT FGs in 85-straight games including his VMI tenure.
BONHAM DROPS 27, NOTCHES BACK-TO-BACK 25+ EFFORTS
-
Trey Bonham scored a season-high 27 points on 11-of-16 (3-of-3 3PT) shooting to help lead Chattanooga to its 74-60 victory at Mercer on Wednesday. The performance followed his 25-point output against UNCG last Saturday, marking the first consecutive 25-point efforts since
Jake Stephens (also a former Keydet) did it three different times during the 2022-23 season which included a stretch of four-straight with 26+.
DISHING OUT A RARE STAT
- In Wednesday's win at Mercer, the Mocs assisted its 26-made FG's just six times opposed to the Bears nine on 22-made FG's. It marked the first victory for UTC in the
Dan Earl with fewer assists in a game than its opponent, moving to 1-11 in such contests.
TRIO OF MOCS HIT MILESTONES IN WEDNESDAY'S WIN
-
Trey Bonham recorded his 300th career FG and 100th career 3PT FG with his first made shot on Wednesday, a step back three in the early moments.
Honor Huff &
Sam Alexis each appeared in their 50th career game while Huff's 15-point effort puts him at 600 in his career and Alexis' eight-rebound game gives him 300 career boards.
BLOCK PARTY
- Led by
Sam Alexis, Chattanooga recorded seven blocks in Wednesday's win at Mercer with the sophomore accounting for a team-high three. It marked the fourth game this season with seven or more blocks, the most for UTC in a single season since six during the 2016-17 campaign. Alexis leads the SoCon in both total blocks (46) and blocks per game (2.56), ranking ninth and 11th in NCAA DI, respectfully.
NATIONAL EYES STAY ON THE MOCS
- UTC & ETSU will battle on Sunday in front of a national audience on ESPN2. The game marks the Mocs third of four national TV contests this season after previous matchups at Auburn (12/30, SECN) and home against UNCG (1/13, CBSSN). The fourth comes on 2/18 at Furman (CBSSN). Factoring in the four contests this season, UTC has played on national TV 15x since the start of the 2021-22, playing to a 7-6 record so far.
