POSTGAME QUOTES
Dan Earl, Head Coach
On Austin Peay's style and opening thoughts.
"They junk things up quite a bit. They are long, active and keep coming at you defensively. You try to thread the needle of running offense, or cutting hard, sharing the ball, but yet you have to be aggressive and can't be tentative. We kind of went east and west about our passes early on instead of being aggressive and going where you want to go. It just took us a little too long to figure that out. We really did get some wide open shots, we just didn't make them."
Â
On moving forward and competition level.
"There isn't a panic button whatsoever. I really like this team, and we will continue to get better. We are thoroughly disappointed we're 0-3 at this point, but we will continue to learn how to play together, tougher and the right way. I was really proud of him tonight. You look in the huddle, Bash, as a fifth-year senior, had a look in his eye that showed he wanted to take this game over. Some of it is just competing, offensively and defensively. I thought Bash did great at that. Another one is
Garrison Keeslar who takes the game on. Some of our younger guys who haven't played a ton of minutes, have a little look that might be unsure. More minutes is more experience. We have to grow up quickly and keep the confidence high."
Â
On the tough night shooting.
"We have faith in our shooters. We have to have a variety of different guys make shots, that's obvious, but when Trey [Bonham] and Honor [Huff] don't shoot it well, it's tough to get everyone going. We have confidence in everyone, but especially those two guys. Making shots will help, but there's so many things to work on. Not rotating, going under screens on good shooters, there's a laundry list of things to get better at."
Â
On the large free-throw attempt disadvantage tonight.
"That's something we have to get better at. They're super aggressive and had an advantage in that regard. We only got there nine times and that might be because we're too tentative. We weren't getting downhill, creating contact, shot faking, going through guys, and then we are fouling them way too much. You have to be strong and make them call fouls, but you can't commit silly fouls and we did that tonight. Austin Peay is a really good team. They played well and we have to learn and grow from this."
Â
Bash Wieland, Gr.-G
On returning after missing the first two games.
"Just to get back out there, I'm thankful for that. It was fun to compete again, obviously I wish we would have won, but it felt good to be back out there for sure. My teammates put me in a lot of good places, Trey [Bonham] and Honor [Huff] are some of the two best guards I've ever played with. Not only how they can shoot, but how they look for people on cuts."
Â
On getting back in rhythm.
"It took a little bit, but once I got out there and had some stuff happen, it was a little easier getting back to it. It felt like we were trailing from behind all game, which we pretty much were. The early pressure really got to us I think. It was a soft pressure that took a lot to break."
Â
On the low shooting totals tonight.
"We're not going to shoot like this all the time. Probably won't even shoot like this the rest of the year. That's the frustrating part. If we hit more shots, it's right there for us. We just have to get ready, get confident and turn it towards Morehead on Thursday."
