POSTGAME QUOTES
Dan Earl, Head Coach
On tonight's win over Morehead State.
"Obviously a tale of two halves to some degree. I didn't say a whole lot of strategic things at halftime, but kind of got on the guys a bit. Super proud of their response in the second half and obviously you can see that we're a work in progress. We have to realize that we're young and just starting to get minutes, so there might be some nerves there, but at the end of the day we have to play much harder. It's been challenging with all of our injuries now, but I assure you we'll play harder than we did in that first half and we'll continue to get better. Again, was proud of their response and we'll continue to improve and win some basketball games. Also Bash (Wieland) had an outstanding night so super proud of him as well."
Â
On being able to bounce back from the 0-3 start.
"It's nice to get a win, certainly, and I think it's nice for everybody. The players, the coaches, it's nice for our fans to see us get a win. But again, we're still a work in progress. We played two really good opponents out west, I thought we had growth from game one to game two, that is USC to Saint Mary's. We did not play well on the road at Austin Peay, but we fought. You can see that we've not shot the ball well and we have to get a little better at shot selection as well. If we're not shooting it well we have to be able to make some different things happen. I thought Bash did a great job at getting some twos around the basket. We don't want to fall in love with the three. But to answer your question again, it's nice to get on the winning track and I think it'll help everybody. We just need time to get better. Bash has only been in like four practices,
Collin Mulholland maybe three and a half practices, Frank's (Champion) still working his way back, we had some other guys injured, but I don't want to use excuses. We will play much harder than that first half, and we will continue to grow and get better. Proud of the guys."
Â
On Bash Wieland's leadership.
"Bash has a million great qualities, one of which is he's never afraid to speak his mind. He's really not afraid to speak. We've had some donor functions and some things where it's really cool, he'll go up to people and introduce himself. He's just a wonderful young man that's willing to speak his mind on the court. That will add a ton of value to this team. In fact, I got on him tonight for allowing that in the first half and how we were playing. Again, I thought a great response from him and I'm looking for even more leadership from him moving forward."
Â
Bash Wieland, Gr.-G
On his excitement of finally being able to get on the court with this team.
"I've mostly just been focused on being thankful that I'm out there. I've had a lot of injuries in the past, and to get our first win is the most important thing. Mostly I'm just thankful that I'm able to contribute to a win. It's harder to lead when you're not playing. That's just the nature of how it is. To be able to be out there and be able to win as a team is just awesome."
Â
On imparting his wisdom to the younger guys on the team.
"That is definitely some of it. I would say, just seeing those guys' potential… I mean Collin (Mulholland) is a redshirt freshman, so he hasn't really had a lot of game experience. What can I do to help him maybe put us in a better position to win? That's what I try to do, and I also enjoy that. I enjoy imparting wisdom to guys that maybe haven't had as much experience."
