CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs wrestling squad faced its second straight top 10 opponent. This one ended 36-6 in favor of the 5th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus.

The match started at 125 with the Buckeyes rolling out nine grapplers ranked from No. 2-18 and a 10th who is a 4-time All-American but unranked at the moment. The Mocs sent out four ranked wrestlers as well in No. 18 Isaiah Powe, No. 24 Blake Boarman, No. 28 Noah Castillo and No. 31 Sergio Desiante.

It was a tough start with a tech fall at 125 with Ty Tice falling to No. 11 Brendan McCrone. Boarman struck first in his matchup with No. 18 Nic Bouzakis at 133. It was a back-and-forth battle with Bouzakis escaping with a 12-7 decision.

Next up was Powe against No. 2 Jesse Mendez in a rematch from the 2024 NCAA Championships. It was tight early locked up at 4-4 with both combatants earning a takedown and escape, but Mendez took control in the second before wrapping it up in the third.

OSU took a major at 149 before the most tightly contested matchup came at 157 between Castillo and No. 10 Paddy Gallagher. All either could do over seven minutes was manage an escape. Gallagher earned the sudden victory with a takedown in overtime.

Jackson Hurst battled Sammy Sasso at 165. Sasso redshirted last season after four years as an All-American. Hurst could not get an advantage, but he fought throughout in a 12-6 decision for the home team.

That set up the Mocs lone win of the night. Desiante and No. 15 Bryce Hepner was cut short by a Hepner injury leading to medical forfeit. The night ended with a decision at 184 and techs at 197 and 285.

Despite the loss, Coach Kye Ruschell could see progress during the early season gauntlet.

"We saw more fight in most matches (than the opener at Virginia Tech). More offense too. These guys competed harder. We know they have even more in them, but now we can start fixing the X's & O's and be ready to host Princeton and Purdue next weekend."
