CHATTANOOGA---The Chattanooga Mocs 5-match win streak came to an end in Maclellan Gym Thursday night. The Mocs wrestlers dropped a 21-15 decision to The Citadel Bulldogs in front of a crowd of 335.
Â
The home team got off to another strong start with major decisions at 125, 133 and 141 building a quick 12-0 advantage behind
Brayden Palmer,
Blake Boarman and
Isaiah Powe. The tide began to turn, however, with the Bulldogs following with two majors of their own sandwiching a decision at 149-165 to close to within a point, 12-11.
Â
Sergio Desiante responded with a hard-fought decision at 174 for a 15-11 lead that went back to one with another Bulldog decision at 184.
Â
Then came a flurry of points at 197.
David Harper took an early 3-0 lead before a reversal a quick four count flipped the script. He battled back to keep close before scrambling for points in the third saw him get caught off balance leading to a major for the visitors and an 18-15 lead.
Â
The big boys closed the match. Despite being the aggressor throughout,
Kaleb Snodgrass could not complete his offense seeing the bout head into extra time at 1-1 through three. He got caught with a takedown in the first OT for a sudden victory win and the 21-15 final for the Bulldogs.
Â
The Mocs hit the road for a quick turnaround Saturday at Gardner-Webb. Match starts at Noon in Paul Porter Arena.
Â
"They showed more fight than we did," Coach
Kyle Ruschell explained. "We talk about it every day (in the room). We knew it would be close, and they would come in and wrestle hard with some experienced guys. We had to match that intensity and just didn't do it often enough throughout the match.
Â
"Hopefully we can have short term memory and come out Saturday and try to get this bad taste out of our mouths at Gardner-Webb."
