Men’s Basketball Heads to The Citadel in Final Southern Conference Road Contest

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team wraps up road play in the league with a Saturday contest in Charleston.

CHATTANOOGA (Feb. 23, 2024) --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team is set for its final Southern Conference road contest of the season with a Saturday afternoon matchup at The Citadel inside McAlister Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
 
Chattanooga (19-9, 11-4 SoCon) enters the weekend in a two-way tie for second place alongside UNCG in the regular season league standings with the Spartans ultimately claiming the No. 2 designation due to tiebreaking rules. Honor Huff has led the Mocs over the past three games while averaging a blistering 28.7 points per game over that span.
 
The Citadel (10-18, 2-13 SoCon) is coming off an 87-78 road loss at Mercer on Wednesday which followed a 76-51 home rivalry win over VMI last Saturday. The Bulldogs have played to a 6-6 record at home this season with both conference victories occurring on its home floor.

MOCS BOUNCE BACK, HUFF SHINES IN 81-65 WIN OVER WOFFORD
- Chattanooga (19-9, 11-4 SoCon) rebounded from Sunday's defeat with a strong performance, defeating Wofford 81-65 on Wednesday night inside McKenzie Arena during the final stretch of SoCon regular season play. Leading 39-38 at the break, UTC used a 10-0 run to begin the second half to help break away from the Terriers. Honor Huff scored 29 points (11-19 FG, 5-11 3PT) to notch his third-straight 25+ scoring effort.
 
CHATTANOOGA/THE CITADEL HISTORY
- Chattanooga & The Citadel will meet for the 94th time in the all-time series history with UTC holding a 73-20 edge in the previous 93 meetings. The Mocs are 31-14 against the Bulldogs in Charleston despite dropping two of the last three. Chattanooga posted a dominating 90-62 victory over The Citadel at home earlier this season on January 27. UTC shot 60.3% in the win.
 
HUFF CONTINUES BLISTERING SCORING ATTACK
- Following a career performance against ETSU and another high-level effort at Furman last week, Honor Huff continued his blistering scoring run with a game-high 29 points on 11-19 FG (5-11 3PT) in Wednesday's win over Wofford. Over the past three games, Huff has averaged 28.7 points per game while shooting 54.0% (27-50) from the field and 48.6% (17-35) from deep. In SoCon-only play this year, Huff is averaging 18.2 points (3rd) while leading in both 3PTM (50) and 3PTM per game (3.3). He enters the weekend ranked 5th in NCAA DI in total 3PTM (93) & 9th in 3PTM per game (3.32).
 
HUFF NAMED SOUTHERN CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Honor Huff finished last week averaging a blistering 28.5 points per game while shooting an efficient 51.6% (16-of-31) from the field, an even 50.0% (12-of-24) mark from three and 92.9% (13-of-14) at the line to help keep Chattanooga among the top three in the league standings. He also averaged 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game while playing a lengthy 37.9 minutes per game. The POTW award is Huff's first of his career & 69th for the program, second most among active league members (FUR, 77).
 
WINNING WITH DIFFERENCE
- Chattanooga is one of 22 NCAA DI teams this season that has featured nine or more different starting lineup combos. Of the nine different lineups, UTC has posted victories with eight of them which currently makes the squad one of just seven NCAA DI programs that have won with eight or more different starting lineups this year.
 
OFFENSIVE EFFICIENCY, SCORING KEY TO WINNING WAYS
- Chattanooga enters the weekend ranked 12th in NCAA DI in Effective FG% (56.4%). UTC has shot 46.0%+ in nine of its last 11 games with three above 59.0%. The Mocs 1.483 points-per-possession at UNCG was its best against a DI opponent in the KenPom era since 1999. UTC is 12-2 this season when scoring 80 or more points while carrying a 17-1 mark when recording a higher FG% than its opponent.
