Men’s Basketball Travels to UNCG Thursday as SoCon Title Race Takes Center Stage

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s basketball team holds sole possession of first place and will face second-place UNCG with an opportunity to claim an outright SoCon regular season title and top seed in next week’s SoCon Tournament.

CHATTANOOGA (February 26, 2025) --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team looks extend its winning ways and earn an outright Southern Conference regular season title with a Thursday night clash at second-place UNCG inside the First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
 
Chattanooga (21-8, 13-3 SoCon), winners of its last nine, is one game ahead of UNCG (19-10, 12-4 SoCon) at the top of the league standings with just two games left. With a win on Thursday, UTC would solidify the program's 13th SoCon regular season crown (first since 2022) and the No. 1 seed in next week's SoCon Tournament.
 
Chattanooga enters the contest carrying NCAA Division I's fourth-longest active win streak at nine games and will search for a program record seventh-straight SoCon road victory. The nine-game winning streak is the longest for the program since nine to open the 2020-21 season while the nine-straight SoCon victories ties the most in a single season since 2015-16.
 
The first meeting between UTC and UNCG resulted in a frantic buzzer-beating finish during a nationally televised broadcast inside McKenzie Arena back on January 9. The visiting Spartans walked out with a 78-75 victory after Ronald Polite III connected on a game-winning three as time expired in regulation.

Chattanooga concludes the regular season at VMI on Saturday in Lexington while UNCG closes out its campaign at home against third-place Samford, who trails second place by one game and first by two entering the week. Final seeds for next week's tournament will be solidified Saturday evening.

CHATTANOOGA EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO NINE
Chattanooga improved to 21-8 and 13-3 in SoCon play after a 76-75 home win over The Citadel on Saturday... extended win streak to nine… currently the fourth longest active win streak in DI.
∙ The nine-game win streak is the longest for UTC since nine to open the 2020-21 season... longest SoCon win streak since the 2015-16 season.
 
UNCG RECENT RESULTS
UNCG (19-10, 12-4 SoCon) is coming off a 78-61 rout at Mercer on Saturday to stay within a game of UTC... the Spartans have won four of its last five with three coming on the road.
UNCG has played to a 10-2 record at home this year... home venue includes both the First Horizon Coliseum (5-2) and its on campus Fleming Gymnasium (5-0)… UNCG is the SoCon's second-highest NET ranked team (116).

UTC currently ranks sixth in NCAA DI in AST/TO ratio (1.71)... 12th in DI in assists per game (17.3)... both lead the SoCon.
 
DAN EARL(Y) SUCCESS AMONG THE BEST
Dan Earl earned win No. 60 at UTC in his third season... just the third UTC head coach to reach 60+ wins in first three seasons (DI era).
Earl is the first UTC head coach since Mack McCarthy (1985-88) to reach 60 wins in first three seasons... McCarthy's 62 total wins are the most for a UTC head coach during the three-season span.
