Softball Takes Two Wins in Day One of Spring in the Springs

SOFTBALL TAKE TWO WINS ON FIRST DAY OF SPRING IN THE SPRINGS
 
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- The Chattanooga softball team claimed a pair of victories Friday at the Gardner-Webb Spring in the Springs Tournament, running its win streak to eight games.
 
Peja Goold posted a strikeout career-high against Stony Brook in the second game and tallied 19 over nine innings on the day while picking up two wins. She gave up three hits and no runs.
 
Camryn Cernuto went 6-for-7 (.857) with an RBI, drew a walk, scored three runs and was 3-for-3 on steals. Jayce Purdy drove in three runs on a 4-for-7 (.571) day at the plate and a sac fly. Zoe Wright, Acelynn Sellers and Olivia Lipari each drove in two runs.
 
CHATTANOOGA 5, IU INDY 4
The Mocs played from behind at the start but mounted a late-inning comeback to claim a 5-4 win over IU Indy in the opening game of the Spring in the Springs hosted by Gardner-Webb.
 
Presely Williamson and Jayce Purdy teamed up to score a pair of runs Friday morning, including the game winner.
 
In the fifth, with two out, Williamson doubled to center field and Abby Orr came in to run. In the next at bat, Purdy singled up the middle and Orr sprinted around the bags to bring the Mocs to within one run at 4-3.
 
In the seventh, the pair teamed up again with Williamson, once again, doubling to center field. This time Izzy Carlyle came in to run and scored on Purdy's single up the middle to give the Mocs the lead for good.
 
Peja Goold struck out five in the game, picking up the win. Taylor Long pitched 4.2 innings and struck out five in the game.
 
Williamson was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Purdy was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Camryn Cernuto went 3-for-3 and two stolen bases. Jones was 2-for-3 with a sacrifice hit. Zoe Wright was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.
 
 IU Indy put up a pair of runs in the first before the Mocs tied it up 2-2 with runs in the second and third. The Jaguars retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third.
 
Chattanooga tied the game in the sixth that started with a single by Raven Jones. She took second after the outfielder overran the ball and advanced to third on a ground out. With two outs, C ernuto sent a shot down the left field line scoring Jones to make it 4-4.
 
 
CHATTANOOGA 7, STONY BROOK 0
Peja Goold struck out a career-high 14 batters Friday afternoon to run the Mocs win streak to eight games in a 7-0 shutout over Stony Brook. Goold struck out two in each of the first four innings and ended the game with her 14th.
 
The Mocs went through the lineup in the first inning getting three runs on two hits and added three more runs in the second.
 
Kailey Snell and Camryn Cernuto reached on back-to-back singles to start the game and Olivia Lipari drew a walk to load the bases. Acelynn Sellers drove in Snell from third on a sac fly to left field. Presley Williamson reached on an error, scoring Cernuto for the second run. Jayce Purdy drove in the third run on a sac fly to center, sending Lipari across the plate.
 
Two runners reached for Stony Brook in the bottom of the first with just one out, but Goold got her first two strikeouts to strand the runners.
 
Snell led off the second inning with a walk. Cernuto followed with a single and an error put both runners into scoring position. Lipari doubled to right center scoring both to make it a 5-0 game and Lipari scored on a fielding error to give UTC a 6-0 lead through two innings.
 
The Seawolves drew a walk to start the bottom of the second and the runner advanced on a sac bunt. However, Goold struck out the final two to end the inning.
 
Lexi Cooley led off the third with a double to deep left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Zoe Wright had a high bouncing single to drive in Cooley for the Mocs final run of the game.
 
Cernuto was 3-for-4 with a walk and scored two runs. Lipari drove in two runs on a 1-for-2 performance in the game with two walks. Cooley was 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run. Sellers, Purdy and Wright each tallied an RBI in the win.
 
The Mocs improve to 10-7 on the year. IU Indy falls to 3-9 and will take on Gardner-Webb Friday. Stony Brook drops to 1-7 overall and also face the host Runnin' Bulldogs Friday.

Chattanooga opens Saturday's play against Stony Brook at 10:00 a.m. and will take on Gardner-Webb at 3:00 p.m. Live stats will be available for both games.
