Softball Sweeps Opening Day in Florida

Mocs run-ruled FDU and held off Binghamton in the first two games of the day.

DELAND, FLA. --- Chattanooga softball run-ruled FDU 8-0 in six innings in the opening game and closed out Day One of the Frank Griffin Classic with a 4-3 win over Binghamton Friday in DeLand, Fla.
 
The Mocs struck out 17 and exploded for 18 hits including two home runs, five doubles and a triple. Zoe Wright was 4-for-6 with a double and triple and two RBI. Acelynn Sellers was 4-for-6 with a home run, a double and drove in two runs. Presley Williamson cranked a three-run homer over the fence in right for three RBI on the day.
 
GAME 1: Chattanooga 8, FDU 0 / 6 innings
The Mocs picked up their eighth run in the sixth inning on a wild pitch to claim an 8-0 run rule victory to start the season.
 
Peja Goold picked up the opening day win, allowing just one hit and striking out 11. She struck out two batters in five different innings and was one shy of her career-high 12 against Louisiana-Lafayette 2023.
 
Chattanooga's first run came in the second on a double from Zoe Wright, plating Abi Pikas from second. In the third, Presley Williamson sent a deep drive over the fence in right scoring Acelynn Sellers and Jayce Purdy to make it 4-0.
 
Sellers put the ball over the fence in left in the fifth inning to put the Mocs up 5-0.
 
The sixth started with a lead-off triple from Wright to right center. With one out, Camryn Cernuto was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners and Olivia Lipari drove in the sixth run of the game on a single to left field.
 
Baileigh Pitts doubled with a hit to deep right that landed just fair to score Cernuto and put Lipari at third.
 
The Knights, attempting to load the bases with an intentional walk to Acelynn Sellers who had a home run earlier in the game, threw the ball over her head to the backstop bringing Lipari home for the winning run.
 
Lipari, Sellers and Wright each went 2-for-3. Wright had a double and a triple with one RBI while Sellers drove in one on a home run. Williamson went 1-for-3 with three RBI on a home run. Pitts was 1-for-3 with one RBI and Lipari drove in a run for the Mocs.

GAME 2: Chattanooga vs. Binghamton
The Mocs picked up their first run in the first on an error. With two outs, Olivia Lipari doubled to center. Baileigh Pitts walked to put runners on first and second. Acelynn Sellers singled to center field and drove in Lipari for the first run. A throwing error by the catcher trying to get Sellers out at second allowed Pitts to come home to make it 2-0.
 
Binghamton cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning on a throw to second to catch the runner stealing. The runner at third took advantage of the throw to score.
 
The Mocs added a pair in the sixth on a couple of singles. Presley Williamson led off the inning with a double and freshman Lexi Cooley came in to run. Abi Pikas sacrificed her over to third and Cooley scored on a single by Zoe Wright to right field.
 
After a pitching change, Wright advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single up the middle from Camryn Cernuto to make it 4-1 in favor of the Mocs.
 
The Bearcats responded with two in the sixth, but the Mocs shutdown the comeback. Taylor Long closed out the sixth with her fifth strikeout of the game. She got her sixth to start the seventh inning and the final two outs came on ground outs.
 
Long went all seven innings, struck out six and allowed three runs. Wright and Cernuto each went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI. Kailey Snell had two hits and Sellers drove in a run with one hit and a walk.
