RECAP: Men’s Golf Leads Midway Through Ross Collegiate

Garrett Engle

Garrett Engle and the Chattanooga Mocs have the lead at the mid-point of the Babygrande Donald Ross Collegiate in historic Southern Pines.

ABOUT CHATTANOOGA GOLF

First Look: The Chattanooga Mocs got the Babygrande Golf Donald Ross Collegiate off to a good start. The Mocs shot 11 under for their 26-31 holes at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. The second round was suspended due to rain with the Scenic City lads holding a 6-stroke lead over host George Mason.

Chattanooga was 7 under in the second round when play was suspended. Its 11 under overall along with the Patriots 5 under are the lone two under par scores on the day. That came after a 4-under 284 to start.

What to Know
  • Babygrande Golf is live streaming both days of the event joining a growing number of college broadcasts in recent years including MocsVision's own at the 2020 Scenic City Collegiate on ESPN+.
  • Babygrande is utilizing its YouTube page with a broadcast team of former PGA TOUR players Tripp Isenhour and Steve Scott, longtime GOLF Channel broadcaster David Marr III and Virginia women's head coach Ria Scott.
  • Senior Dalton Chuba led the morning work with a 3-under 69. He was joined on the counting cards by Camden Braidech and Garrett Engle with 70s and Ethan Whitaker's 75.
  • Engle birdied four of his first five holes in round two. He's a team-best 5 under when play was suspended. That's just ahead of Chuba at 4 under and Braidech at 3 under.
  • If the Mocs hold on for the win AND earn a medalist honor (there are three in the top 10), it will mark the first time in school history to sweep titles at three tournaments in a season. Previous wins are at the Qubein Cup (Camden Braidech) and Bentwater Intercollegiate (Breadon Wear/Ethan Whitaker).
  • Should a Moc win individually, it would be the first time since 2016-17 for the program to have medalists in three different tournaments?  2016-17 [Wes Gosselin (Mobile Sports Authority Int.), Brooks Thomas (USA Ind.) and Etienne Brault (Trevecca Inv.)].
  • Another win for Braidech, Wear or Whitaker would make them the first Moc since A.J. Lintunen in 2020-21 to win multiple times in a season.
