Quick Recap
It's a crowded leaderboard after day one of the Southern Conference Wrestling Championships. The Chattanooga Mocs are fourth with just three-and-a-half points separating the quartet atop the charts.
Â
The Mocs had four work their way through the field to set up championship matches tomorrow. It started with
Blake Boarman at 133 who was followed three classes later by
Noah Castillo at 157.
Sergio Desiante and
Kamdyn Munro go back-to-back at 174 and 184.
Â
Two more Mocs earned their way through the back draws to third-pace matchups.
Eli Knight (141) and
Jackson Hurst (165) are looking for their first league podium posts. That above four are the only ones who made it out of the quarterfinals. The remaining six wrestlers did tremendous work in the consolations to put their squad in the hunt with Knight and Hurst leading the way.
Â
First Take
"We knew it was going to be like this. The dual meets throughout the whole year have been tight one way or the other. Still gotta make up a little bit of ground, but I think our guys are responding to adversity and we just gotta find a couple more points (tomorrow)." –
Coach Kyle Ruschell on day one in Asheville

Final Thoughts
"They did what we know they're capable of, and that's pretty simple, right? They went out there looking to score points, and it showed." –
Ruschell on the four semifinalists
Â
"The first round didn't go as well as we'd like. But our studs, the guys we count on they. they rocked it out and banged through the semis. That's huge. And then coach told us that back sides win the tournament. We came out hot that second round. Everybody won and kept that momentum high and, you know, I think a lot of guys are peaking at the right time, so we just got to make it count tomorrow." –
Jackson Hurst
Â
"We've been preaching for two months that it's going to take all 10 guys. Not just to score points but also look to dominate. Not just get a half a point on the back side, go get two, three points...as much as they can. Everybody went out there to look for those bonus points. " –
Ruschell on the team's work in the back draws
