Volleyball Looks Ahead to Tennessee Tech for First SoCon Meeting

The Mocs travel to Cookeville to take on Tennessee Tech on Tuesday
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Chattanooga ends its three-match road trip tomorrow night at Tennessee Tech, marking the first meeting between the two in-state schools as SoCon opponents. The Mocs are looking to earn their first conference win of the year while the Golden Eagles are looking to remain unbeaten in league play. Chattanooga is 14-30 all-time vs. Tennessee Tech and is 3-7 in the last 10 matches against them... The Mocs are 2-13 in road matches against the Golden Eagles... About Chattanooga
The Mocs are riding a four-match losing skid to begin conference play and are coming off a pair of losses at Furman. The first match against the Paladins came down to the wire, with the Mocs falling 16-14 in the fifth set. The second match was all Furman though as the home team won in three sets. Chattanooga's last win came on September 19 against Norfolk State by way of a reverse sweep. The other four teams UTC has defeated this year are Tennessee State, UT Martin, Jackson State, and Presbyterian.Â
As a team, UTC is one of the top teams in the SoCon in blocks, averaging 2.07 per set to rank third. Looking at other teams stats, the Mocs average 11.56 kills per set, 10.72 assists per set, 14.34 digs per set, and 1.41 service aces per set. A key threshold for the Blue and Gold offensively is the .200 hitting percentage, as they are 5-0 when they hit .200 or higher.Â
One of Chattanooga's key players is its libero, Caiti Barthel, who ranks second in the SoCon in digs per set at 4.36 and third in total digs with 266 on the year. She has led the Mocs in digs this year in all but one match. Staying on the defensive side of the net, Chattanooga's trio of Jordin Glass, Kynli Kirkendoll, and Bailey Burgess have each been great blockers. Burgess and Kirkendoll are among the top six in the league in blocks per set, led by Burgess at 1.08 blocks per set. Kirkendoll leads the team in total blocks with 58 while Glass has 44 to her name.Â
Offensively, setters Ashley Reynolds (6.31 assists per set) and Mallory Merz (3.71 assists per set) have an assortment of attackers who have stepped up at different points this season to work with. Recently, outside hitter Gracie Rose has been a standout player for UTC, totaling 26 kills in the two matches at Furman. She now leads the team in kills at 137 and kills per set at 2.31. Fellow outside hitters, Elena Vukmanov and Addison Walker also have been productive players this season for the Mocs. In the middle, Glass (2.16 kills per set) and Kirkendoll (2.03 kills per set) have been key players offensively. Kirkendoll holds a .261 hitting percentage while Glass is right behind her at .243.

After going 4-8 in non-conference play, Tennessee Tech has had a joyous start to life in the SoCon, rattling off four wins in a row and finding itself tied atop the league standings with Wofford. The Golden Eagles started off with a pair of home wins over Furman before winning twice on the road at The Citadel last weekend. Tech has proven to be a strong team on its home court, as it is a perfect 5-0 so far this season playing in Cookeville.Â
Looking at Tennessee Tech statistically, it ranks third in the SoCon in kills per set at 12.69 and third in assists per set at 11.76. Defensively, TTU is second in the league in opponent hitting percentage, holding teams to a mark of .176. When it comes to digs, the Golden Eagles average 14.95 per set.Â
Outside hitter Alayna Pierce is the go-to player offensively for Tech, as she averages 3.77 kills per set, which is second in the conference. She has had 10 or more kills in all but four matches this season, including an 18-kill performance in her last game at The Citadel. She also contributes defensively with a 2.38 digs per set average. Fellow outside hitter Audrey Berkebile with 2.75 kills per set and middle blocker Jordyn Milhouse at 1.90 kills per set are two other offensive pieces for the Golden Eagles. Milhouse is TTU's best blocker, averaging 0.77 blocks per set.Â
Morgan Petelin is Tech's setter, and she is fifth in the league with 579 assists, equating to 9.34 assists per set. Just a freshman, Petelin has been an instant impact player for TTU, posting 30 or more assists in each of her last 14 matches. She had 36 assists and 41 assists in the two games in Charleston last weekend. She also leads the team in digs with 177 so far this season, leading to nine double-doubles.Â
