Softball Dominates UIC; Splits on Day One of Frost

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga softball team split on the opening day of the Frost Classic with a 6-1 loss to Cornell before waking up its bats with a 15-0 domination of UIC in the nightcap. Sophia Guerra picked up a five-inning shut out and the Mocs got multi-hit efforts from Mia Leone, Baileigh Pitts, Chloe Lackey, Annika Segedi and Abi Pikas.
 
GAME 1: Chattanooga 1, Cornell 6
Cornell, led by former Chattanooga softball player Tara Tembey Smith, came away with a 6-1 win inside Frost Stadium in the second game of the day. The Big Red picked up runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings for the win.
 
The first run came with two on and a single to center drove in the first run. After a walk, senior Taylor Long entered the game and struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning. A two-run homer in the fifth pushed the lead to 3-0 and three more runs crossed the plate in the sixth to put Cornell up 6-0.
 
The Mocs lone run came in the sixth Chloe Lackey reached on an error and took second as the ball got away. A ground out to second moved Lackey to third and another ground out made it a 6-1 final. Chattanooga had the bases loaded in the fourth, but failed to get a run across the plate.
 
Long struck out seven in the game and allowed one walk. She was tapped for five runs on six hits while Emery Bales got the loss with one run allowed on four hits.
 
GAME 2: Chattanooga 15, UIC 0
Sophia Guerra walked away with a five-run shutout in the Mocs 15-0, run-rule victory over Illinois-Chicago in the nightcap.
 
Chattanooga's bats woke up with a vengeance in game two. The Mocs scored in each inning led by Mia Leone who went 3-for-3 in the game with five RBI and a monster 3-run homer in the first.
 
Abi Pikas, with two hits, led off the game with a triple to center field. Annika Segedi followed with a triple of her own to drive in the first run. Baileigh Pitts drew a walk to put two on for Leone who took a 2-2 count to deep center field. The Mocs loaded the bases three batters later and picked up a fifth run on a fielder's choice.
 
Chattanooga scored one run in the second, plating Pitts on a fielder's choice. Pikas grounded out, but drove in Grace Hixson to make it a 7-0 game in the third. Leone doubled to left center, driving in two more runs, and scored on a pinch hit walk to Anna Dovey later in the inning. Auburn Karls, getting the start at catcher, drove in two more runs on a single to left center, but was thrown out trying to take second to end the inning.
 
Jade Gainer, who led off the fourth with a pinch-hit walk, scored the Mocs 13th run on a bases-loaded RBI ground out by Shayna Glass. The Mocs next run scored on a wild pitch and the 15th on a pass ball.
 
Pikas was 2-for-4 and scored twice, Pitts was 1-for-1 with two walks and scored three times.
 
Guerra struck out one, did not allow a walk, gave up five hits and recorded her first shut out for the Mocs.
 
Day Two of the Frost Classic gets started at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with UIC and Cornell. The Mocs will take on UIC at 1:30 p.m. and Cornell in the third game of the day. All games are played at Frost Stadium. Tickets are on sale at the Frost Stadium ticket booth or GoMocs.com.
