Men’s Tennis Downs Furman 4-3, Earns First Win in Greenville Since 1999

The Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis team is now 3-0 in SoCon play after completing the weekend sweep in the Palmetto State.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (March 22, 2026) – The Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team continued its hot start to Southern Conference play after posting the program's first road victory over Furman in Greenville, S.C., since 1999 with a thrilling 4-3 decision on Sunday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center.

"This is always a tough trip to South Carolina. Getting two wins on the road and facing adversity while doing it, that's big for us," said head coach Chuck Merzbacher.
 
"I cannot be any prouder of this team."

  • Chattanooga improves to 8-8 overall and a perfect 3-0 in SoCon action… third-straight victory… Furman falls to 5-11 overall and suffers its first SoCon loss, moving to 2-1 inside the league.
  • First 3-0 start for UTC in SoCon play since 2023 (regular season champions)… 2023 season saw a 5-0 start… second 3-0 start to SoCon action under head coach Chuck Merzbacher.
  • Chattanooga earned its first win over Furman in Greenville since 1999… just its sixth-ever win on the road at Furman… entered 5-17 in the previous 22 ties.
 
Match Recap
In doubles, Chattanooga swept all three matches as Jaxon Lamb and Carter Ramthun kicked things off with a commanding 6-1 win over Alex Han and Finn Pollard on court No. 3. The No. 1 pair, Cortland Grove and Jakub Jupa, followed suit with a 6-1 victory over Nicolas Dispas and Nico Snyder to clinch the team point before Julian Franzmann and Kristof Kincses earned a 6-3 victory against Evan Duggal and Landon Ecarma at No. 2.
 
Chattanooga and Furman split the six singles matches which resulted in high-level drama down the stretch. Jupa started strong for the Mocs at No. 1, defeating Snyder in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Furman responded at No. 4 to pull within a point as Duggal posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Grove. Franzmann put UTC ahead 3-1 in the match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Theophile Joly in the No. 2 slot.
 
Furman continued to battle, claiming court No. 6 as Ecarma defeated Ramthun (6-4, 6-3) to bring the hosts within a point once again (3-2). Walker Allen extended Furman's momentum and tied the match 3-3 following a 7-5, 6-1 result over Kincses at No. 5. Chattanooga's Delnido clinched the team's first victory over the Paladins in Greenville since 1999 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Dispas at No. 3 singles.
